CHESTNUT BROTHERS
URBAN GUERRILLA ORCHESTRA
A Philadelphia Crossroads Concert

On Saturday, November 20, Crossroads Music presents an evening of Philly funk and soul featuring the inspirational R&B of the Chestnut Brothers and the old-school funk of Urban Guerilla Orchestra. The concert will begin at 7:30 at Calvary Church at 48th Street and Baltimore Avenue. Tickets are available at the door and priced on a $5-15 sliding scale.

Al and Ty, the CHESTNUT BROTHERS, were born in Columbia, South Carolina and raised in Philadelphia, PA. Their soulful rhythm and blues arrangements blend inspirational lyrics with infectious, irresistible grooves entertaining audiences in major U.S. cities, and throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and the Middle East. In addition to their own work, they have recorded with Grover Washington, Jr., Luther Vandross, and Najee. The Chestnut Brothers' received the American Cities Foundation’s “2003 Men Making A Difference Award” for their commitment to community service, and their involvement with the international peace movement and passion for social change can be heard in many of their original songs. Audiences also love their songs for their dance and romantic appeal. Several audio samples of their work can be found at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/chestnutbrothers.

The word “funk” has many meanings in the music industry. After seeing a performance by URBAN GUERILLA ORCHESTRA, an 18-piece marvel directed by Philadelphia trumpeter Henri McMillian, most people only recognize one -- old school funk, as good as it gets. We can't fit the whole band on the stage at Calvary, but Mr. McMillian assures us that the 9 member's he's bringing will still blow you away.

Doors open at 7:00 and supper is available from 6:15. The menu includes: Seafood Casserole, Vegetarian Chili with Textured Soy and Mixed Rice (Brown, Wild and White), Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Mixed Greens, Tossed Salad, Pies (Assorted), Applesauce Raisin Cake, and Chocolate Fudge Cake. A full meal (entree, two sides, beverage and dessert) is $5 and items are also available a la carte.

Bluegrass and Oldtime Music with the Kruger Brothers!
Saturday, February 19th, 2005 8PM
Walt Whitman Arts Center, Camden, NJ

The Kruger Brothers, originally from Switzerland, have been performing professionally since 1973. Almost twenty years later, after playing together in various formations throughout Europe, Uwe Kruger on guitar, and Jens Kruger on banjo, teamed up with bassist Joel Landsberg to form the band as it appears on stage today.

Kruger Brothers performances are exciting, entertaining and spontaneous, exhibiting their sheer joy in playing music. Although each of these musicians has earned high credit for his skills individually, it is the interaction of the three together which makes their music so uniquely special. Traditional American Folk and Bluegrass music would come closest to describing the band's style of playing. Add to that their personal musical development, along with their Classical European musical influences, and you have acoustic string music performed with a rich new flavor.

The Krugers have been appearing regularly in the U.S. since 1997 at such prestigious events as Merlefest, Doc Watson Music Fest, Wayne Henderson Festival, Walnut Valley Festival, Greyfox, Festival of the Bluegrass, Wings and Strings, IBMA, Festival for the Eno, Oklahoma Intl Bluegrass Festival, WEFest, as well as numerous other festivals. Hundreds of Arts Council and Theater concerts, plus appearances on national and international radio and television, have earned the Brothers the love of audiences and the respect of the music industry worldwide.

The Walt Whitman Arts Center is located five minutes from center city Philadelphia, right across the Benjamin Franklin Bridge at 2nd and Cooper streets in Camden, NJ. In our intimate 187-seat theater there are no bad seats! For directions, visit http://www.waltwhitmancenter.org

Tickets are $15.00; call 856-964-8300 for reservations!

Crossroads events fall into three groups. Monthly Philadelphia Crossroads concerts brings together contrasting but related music from two different Philadelphia communities. The Root and Branch series continue the former Cherry Tree Music Co-op's series of concerts by nationally-known touring artists. Finally, the Folklife Center's Nada Brahma (Sanskrit for "The World is Sound") events presents locally-based and national and international touring artists from culturally-specific traditions around the world. In addition, we collaborate with other organizations in producing several free community events at other West Philadelphia locations each year.

All concerts take place at 7:30 pm in the historic Calvary United Methodist Church at the corner of 48th Street and Baltimore Avenue. The 34 subway-surface trolley stops at the door, and a free, well-lit, and city-maintained parking lot is located on the block. Dinner and refreshments are available at the concerts and at excellent restaurants nearby.
