Wed. Feb. 23, 8pm

An evening of surrealist and avant garde films in honor of artist Salvador Dali and the Dali exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Featuring:

Un Chien Andalou (1929, Dir. Luis BuÃuel, 16 mins., B & W): Acclaimed as a surrealist masterpiece, Un Chien andalou aggressively disconnects itself from narrative flow. The creators of this short film. Luis BuÃuel and Salvador DalÃ, fully intended there to be no links between successive scenes. Fortunately this didn't inhibit their dreaming up of some of the most striking moments ever to be projected upon the silver screen. The opening focuses on a man (Luis BuÃuel) stropping his cut-throat razor, honing it to a perfect edge. Stepping onto the balcony, he gazes at the moon. This celestial orb is instantly replaced with a woman and, enlarging rapidly, her left eye. The bare blade then descends on her unprotected pupil, a graphic incident. Read more.

Ballet Mechanique (1924, Dir. Fernand Leger, 15 mins., B & W): With cinematography by Dudley Murphy and Man Ray, Fernand Leger weaves images of geometric shapes and humans into a symbolic Freudian dance.

Entr'acte (1924, Dir. Renà Clair, 22 mins., B & W, Starring Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Erik Satie): A classic French silent film of dance and Dada, this film was produced by French dance company Les Ballet Suedois, and stars them as well, mourning the loss of their star dancer Jean BÃrlin. An outrageous funeral procession is mounted, with the hearse being pulled by a camel. On the way up an incline, the hearse breaks loose, and all the mourner/dancers give terribly graceful chase. When the hearse finally stops, the "deceased" rises again for a terrific solo. Read more.

Sistren of Color, Quilting Our Saga: An Evening of Storytelling, Spoken Word, and Dance

Featuring:

Daughters of the Diaspora (spoken word duo)
Monica McIntyre (cellist/vocalist/lyricist)
Delcina Thomas (storyteller)
Aryanai Manring (dancer)
Misa Dinea (dancer)

In honor of black history month, it is important to understand the power of the spoken word and how history was passed from generation to generation via story telling and song. Enslavement, oppression and colonization stripped identity and traditions away from people of color. However, women of color, being traditional backbones of society, have served as the matriarchal bearers of our culture and continue to expose and present the richness of our history. This eveningÃs event brings together a collective of women to share stories and anecdotes with a larger audience. The à metaphor of quilting alludes to how African Americans have also traditionally used quilting during migration to tell stories through textiles and fabric.

This event is a fundraiser to send women to the Incite: Women Against Violence Conference in New Orleans March 11-13, 2005. Donations will be collected at the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

LINGUISTICS
http://www.soul-sanctuary.net

LINGUISTICS was originally conceived as a poetry slam, but we soon realized that Philadelphia was asking more from us than just another poetry competition. Our words move people, so we bear some responsibility for moving folks in a more positive direction. Thus, we've revised the LINGUISTICS vibe to that which promotes more social action. Come out with your spoken word, your rhymes, your monologues or your songs and let's speak peace and power into existence! We're looking for your thought-provoking and inspiring pieces to get us geared up to go out and spread good news to all within earshot.
