3/25 10pm-2am The Gathering: monthly showcase for hip hop in Philadelphia. On the last Thursday of every month, Philly's b-boys, emcees, turntablists, and graf writers come out to add their own contributions to feature performances by emcee groups, bands, graffiti panelists, and guest DJs, under the guidance of host I BE and resident DJ M-SKI. The event naturally takes shape from the force of its own audience- over and under 21 alike- the people who make up hip hop culture in Philly. ________________________________________________________

3/27 2pm Sat. 3/27 8pm The Sick City Showcase, with Global Chaos, The Vote, Famous in Vegas, UnderRage, Dumb Fat Kids, Iron Balls McGinty. THE GROOVE: The open mic jam session that endeared itself to the hearts of area vocalists, poets, MCs and musicians during its runs at South St. Blues and Soul Sanctuary. There's this slammin' house band called dB (Decibel), see ...led by DAMON "Mr. Dizzy Fingers" BENNETT on keys, with CONLEY WHITFIELD on bass, JAMES ROUSE on the traps and CARLOS IZAGUIRREO on percussion. They play most of the night, but any musicians who want to sit in can bring their own weapon of choice or just politely ask to get down with an instrument and do their thing. There's no list here, see ... no politicking to get on the mic. The vibe is kept flowing by these 2 co-hosts that have a weirdly wonderful yin/yang thing between them. There's this dude named BERNARD COLLINS who can freestyle his ass off and occasionally breaks out with this strange, but slammin' poetry. He even sings sometimes, but you can never really expect any words. It's mostly like scat on speed. Then there's the cool sistavibe of The Queen Bee STEPHANIE RENEE. Most of the time she's singing something soothing for the people, bringing out their sexy, mellow side. But don't sleep ... she jumps all up in the hip-hop cyphers too, either with a phat hook or a rhyme of her own. ________________________________________________________

4/7 8pm Chris Cutler, with The Red Masque CHRIS CUTLER (UK) uses miked pads, cymbals, drums, mundane objects, and countless other unusual items in order to produce his brand of new music. At the start of the seventies, with Dave Stewart, he co-founded The Ottawa Music Co, a 22 piece Rock composer's orchestra, eventually joining British experimental group Henry Cow with whom he toured, recorded and worked in dance and theatre projects until it's demise in 1978. In 1997, Henry Cow, The Mike Westbrook Orchestra, and Frankie Armstrong formed a big-band and toured around Europe. After Henry Cow, Cutler went on to co-found a series of mixed national groups Art Bears, News from Babel, Cassiber, The (ec) Nudes, P53 and The Science Group. He was a permanent member of American bands Pere Ubu, Hail and The Wooden Birds and now works sporadically with John Rose, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Iancu Dumitrescu, Peter Blegvad and Stevan Tickmayer.Other lasting collaborations have included Telectu (Portugal), Mieku Shimuzu (Japan),The Hyperion Ensemble (Romania), Gong, and The Residents.
THE RED MASQUE is an original avant rock band from the Philadelphia area. Part art, part alchemy, the group's progressive songwriting style is both angular and eerie, accented by freeform space rock improvisations, intricate acoustics, dark atmospherics and chunky riffs. Unconventional and eccentric in musical form, the band fuses together such disparate musical references as horror movie soundtracks, rock-in-opposition, zeuhl, gothic, psychedelia and kraut rock. With such influences as Magma, King Crimson, Dead Can Dance, medieval and world music, Hawkwind, Gong, Bauhaus, and Van Der Graaf Generator, the band's two releases, Death of the Red Masque (2001) and Victoria and the Haruspex (2002), are both heady and potent musical elixirs. Their latest single, Beggars & Thieves, released in June of 2003, is charting even newer (and sophisticatedly sinister) territories, and the highly-anticipated full-length album Feathers for Flesh is due out in early 2004. The Red Masque is: Kiarash Emami: electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, keyboards, pennywhistle, Brandon Ross: bass guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards, Lynnette Shelley: vocals, lyrics, noises & percussion, webmistress, and Brian (Vonorn) Van Korn: drums & percussion, flutes, celtic harp, keyboards, theremin.
