Sun., Dec. 12, 12-6pm: The Rotunda Flea Market-A-Thon

Come by and shop for crafts, art, clothing, jewelry, cheap gifts, and other oddities. We'll have 40 vendors, music, food, and fun. (VENDING SPOTS ARE SOLD OUT)

THE ROTUNDA FLEA MARKET-A-THON, sponored by The Foundation Community Arts Initiative, Vitamin D Productions, and Sherman Community Arts, will aim to raise funds for The Rotunda's community-based programming.

Following the stellar event that was last year's Rotunda Flea Market Fundraiser, The Foundation Community Arts Initiative (The Foundation), which is the student and community group that maintains The Rotunda, will host The Rotunda Flea Market-A-Thon! In addition, Sherman Community Arts and Vitamin D Productions, as well as individual community partners, will join The Foundation in planning, promoting, and handling other aspects of the event, exemplifying The Rotunda's presence as an open gathering place for all people.

Due to continued budget cuts, rising expenses, and a larger performance and education roster to maintain, The Foundation needs financial assistance to keep its level of community programming consistent for the 2005 calendar year. For over five years, The Foundation has presented [mostly] free, all-ages events that are open to the public at The Rotunda. These events include concerts showcasing music from the popular to the obscure, film screenings, dance presentations, theater pieces, festivals, art exhibits, workshops, lectures, open meetings, and more. In addition to hosting these public events, The Foundation has facilitated youth programs for registered children, as well as DJ classes for women, rehearsals for local groups, etc. In effect, The Rotunda has become a safe, friendly, bustling gathering place for all types of art and the people who create it.

Performers include:
MC Ramshackle; Master of Ceremonies, The Great Quentini (MCing!) members of the Girls' DJ Collective (spinning a mix of many genres), Men in Fur, (Members of The Snowfairies & Golden Ball) DJ Reflect, Dj Robotrake, Otono Brujo, Joshua Marcus (Like Moving Insects) &  Amy Pickard (She-Haw) Reuben Jones (spoken word), Vitamin D picks Presents Amy in Space and Mia Johnson (singer songwriters), Cassendre Xavier (singer songwriter), _______________________________________________________

Tue. Dec. 14, 9pm: Large Marge Musical Movie Fundraisers Presents

DISCO DANCER.

Donations at this event will be collected for The Rotunda's diverse community-based programming.

Director: B. Subhash Music: Bappi-Lahiri;
Lyrics: Anjaan-Faruk Kaiser
Year: 1982
Running Time: 2 hours 15 minutes

From http://www.brns.com/bollywood/pages1/bolly38.html: If you always thought what "Saturday Night Fever" really needed to reach that next level was some high flying kung fu, background dancers, and killers with machine guns, this is the film for you...Filled to the rooftop with bad decor, bad outfits, bad hair, bad dance steps and bad melodrama, this film is an absolute hoot, so bad and yet so satisfying...It is the perfect midnight movie ala Rocky Horror Show and one can picture the audience showing up dressed in their favorite bad outfit from the film, mouthing the English lines like "Get out you bastard" and dancing awkwardly in the aisles. It all begins with Jimmy as a little boy performing on the streets of Bombay along with Rajesh Khanna (in what is billed as a friendly appearance) their guitar and drums entertaining the whole neighborhood. From the distance, a rich little girl watches the fun loving pair in envy and one day she invites Jimmy behind her compound wall
to make music together. Her father comes home, though, and whacks [Jimmy] across the face, throws his mother down on the ground, and has [him] arrested. Jeered by their neighbors, the mother and son are forced to leave Bombay in shame and settle elsewhere, but the little boy swears vengeance-- his weapon of choice is disco...

Five year unexplained gap. Thirteen years in Philadelphia recovering from wounds received while fighting Gondar. In the words of an 8-year-old critic: "Don't be afraid Mom, he's just a Sacred Clown.")

MOOG, the new documentary about Robert Moog, inventor of the modern synthesizer, is a portrait of the legendary figure in music and technology and his ideas about creativity, design, interactivity, spirituality and his collaborations with musicians over the years. MOOG was directed by Hans Fjellestad and produced by Fjellestad and Ryan Page, who collaborated on FRONTIER LIFE (2002), a film about Tijuana, Mexico, and its burgeoning electronic dance music scene.

Watch the movie trailer for MOOG (QuickTime): http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

http://www.zu33.com/moog/

MOOG is distributed by Plexifilm: http://www.plexifilm.com/

Permanently changing the face of music, the "Moog synthesizer" went from being the centerpiece of a late-60s craze -- appearing on records with such titles as Spotlight on the Moog, Moog Power, Music to Moog By, Country Moog, Moog Indigo, Exotic Moog and countless others -- to an indispendable instrument for progressive rock bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Yes to predating the electronic dance music movement of today.

Moog explains that he "can feel what's going on in a piece of electronic equipment... it's something between discovering and witnessing." And he is convinced that many musicians come to "feel" a circuit in a similar way. In fact, musicians make such strong emotional connections with the electronics inside a Moog synthesizer that the inventor himself has reached cult hero status.

Born in 1934, Robert Moog has been inventing and building electronic musical instruments for nearly half a century. Still active in his workshop in rural North Carolina, Moog continues to shape musical culture with some of the most inspiring instruments ever created.

The film was shot on location in Asheville, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo and London, featuring appearances by Keith Emerson, Walter Sear, Gershon Kinsgley, Jean-Jacques Perrey & Luke Vibert, Rick Wakeman, DJ Spooky, Herb Deutsch, Bernie Worrell, Pamelia Kurstin, Tino Corp. with Charlie Clouser, Money Mark, Mix Master Mike, and an eclectic mix of performers.

Artists such as Stereolab, Meat Beat Manifesto, Tortoise, Money Mark, Luke Vibert & Jean-Jacques Perrey, 33, Moog Cookbook, Plastiq Phantom, Psilonaut, Bernie Worrell & Bootsy Collins, Roger O'Donnell, The Album Leaf, Pete Devriese, Bostich, Charlie Clouser, Baiyon, Suzanne Ciani, Gershon Kingsley, Doug McKechnie, Electric Skychurch and others contributed original music produced on Moog instruments for the soundtrack.

Sun., Dec. 19, 8:30pm: The Hydrogen Jukebox

Eric Broomfield: vocals, guitar, lyrics
Royce Allen Pape: clarinet
Matt Broomfield: bass, keyboards, vocals
Justin Berger: guitar, mandolin, vocals
Roger Hammer III: didgeridoo, percussion, bass, vocals, guitar
Styx Latte: drums, percussion, vocals

Consider this: You are at a show. The band you are watching isn't just providing music- it's providing an experience. The Hydrogen Jukebox does exactly that...

Based out of Philadelphia, The Hydrogen Jukebox started off in 1999 as a small rock group and has since expanded into a larger band. Horns, percussion, synthesizers and other instruments have found their way into the music. While it's impossible to fit the H-Box into any specific category, their music deftly maneuvers through a wide array of musical styles to produce a uniquely original sound. The band combines rock, blues, jazz, electronica and psychedelic seamlessly. The group also uses individual and group improvisations to give audiences fresh and dynamic live performances. ...The Hydrogen Jukebox shows are an event. Their performance is much like the live paintings that often take place at their shows. Every song, like every brush stroke, brings its own distinctive color, texture and shape. In addition to the live paintings, dancing, puppetry and other vibrant visuals are not uncommon at a performance. The band's music and its encouragement of participation have turned
people from mere audience members into loyal followers.

While the band's fan base is primarily in Philadelphia, The Hydrogen Jukebox has captured fans in New York, Ohio, Virginia and Maryland. They have played all sorts of venues from nightclubs to huge outdoor festivals. The band recently put of a self-produced EP entitled "Eat your T.V., Watch Your Meat" which is on its own label, Spacefrog Records. Currently, The Hydrogen Jukebox is playing regularly in Philadelphia and is embarking on a national tour.

Tue., Dec. 21, 7:30pm: STINKY BOY TENNIS BALL JUNKIES
PRESENTS:

I Heard,
a montage by Julia Susman

What is it that you say that you do not mean?
What is it that you mean that you cannot say?
What is our truth that we cannot make true?
What is so true that you cannot believe?
Oh, I heard something about that.

I Heard, is a series of monologues and short scenes strung together with honesty and vulgarity. Photography and a score by Christopher Wood bring depth and visual representation to this production that deals with ideas regarding how we say and do things that we do not mean, and mean and do things that we do not say.

How do we blind ourselves to our truth?

Those who are easily offended should attend at their own risk.

Sat., Jan. 8, doors at 6pm: Ruder Than You (RTY), and special guests. http://www.ruderthanyou.net
This concert will celebrate the release of âPhilly Stylee,â Ruder Than Youâs long-awaited third CD featuring the late Trish  Johnson on bari-sax, and several top Philadelphia guest  musicians.  Trish was killed in a car accident in 1997 returning from a solo  jazz performance.  The CD is dedicated to her.

The CD, conceived and recorded at the peak of the Third Wave, was never completed for a number of reasons, but mostly due to a 3-year  incarceration of lead singer, DJ Freddie 3D Weaver.

The CD will feature RTY's hybrid style ska, reggae,  hip-hop, dancehall, rub-a-dub, and rocksteady.
