The Philadelphia Chapter of Billionaires for Bush Present THE
CORPORATION (2004, Color, Canada, in English, 145 minutes)
http://billionairesforbush.com
http://www.eviltwinboking.com

A darkly amusing account of the institution's evolution as a legal
"person," THE CORPORATION is a powerful indictment of the roots of
corporate power. So, what kind of person is it? The filmmakers
conclude that a person whose prime directive is to produce
ever-increasing profit for its shareholders -- regardless of the cost
to people or the planet -- fits the diagnostic criteria of a
psychopath. One hundred and fifty years ago, the corporation was a
relatively insignificant entity. Today, it is a vivid, dramatic and
pervasive presence in all our lives. Like the Church, the Monarchy and
the Communist Party in other times and places, the corporation is
today's dominant institution. But history humbles dominant
institutions. All have been crushed, belittled or absorbed into some
new order. The corporation is unlikely to be the first to defy
history. In this complex and highly entertaining documentary, Mark
Achbar, co-director of the influential and inventive MANUFACTURING
CONSEN
T: NOAM CHOMSKY AND THE MEDIA, teams up with co-director Jennifer
Abbott and writer Joel Bakan to examine the far-reaching repercussions
of the corporation's increasing preeminence. Featuring interviews with
CEOs and top-level executives from some of the world's largest
corporations and critical thinkers: Noam Chomsky, Peter Drucker,
Milton Friedman, Naomi Klein, Vandana Shiva, Steve Wilson, Jane Akre
and muckraking filmmaker Michael Moore. Winner of the AUDIENCE AWARD
for DOCUMENTARY in WORLD CINEMA at the 2004 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL and
numerous other awards including 7 audience choice awards. Based on the
book: "The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power"
by Joel Bakan.

[insert sarcasm here] Billionaires for Bush is a grassroots network of
corporate lobbyists, decadent heiresses, Halliburton CEOs, and other
winners under George W. Bush's economic policies. Headquartered in
Wall Street and with over 60 chapters nationwide, we'll give whatever
it takes to ensure four more years of putting profit over people.
After all, we know a good president when we buy one.

LINGUISTICS
http://www.soul-sanctuary.net
Every last Saturday.

LINGUISTICS was originally conceived as a poetry slam, but we soon
realized that Philadelphia was asking more from us than just another
poetry competition. Our words move people, so we bear some
responsibility for moving folks in a more positive direction. Thus,
we've revised the LINGUISTICS vibe to that which promotes more social
action. Come out with your spoken word, your rhymes, your monologues
or your songs and let's speak peace and power into existence! We're
looking for your thought-provoking and inspiring pieces to get us
geared up to go out and spread good news to all within earshot.

Wed., Feb. 9 , 7:30pm

A special concert with Mirah and The Weeds, benefiting the Jewish
Dialogue Group!

Featuring:
Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn -- an internationally known and beloved indie
rock musician (with a bit of klezmer and jazz and Argentina and other
things). Born here in Philadelphia in 1974, Mirah has released 5
albums and toured all over the world.

The Weeds -- rock-poems-sounds & songs, with Emily Ana Zeitlyn and
Sunday Livingston

Suggested donation: $8 to $18 per person, more if you can afford it.
No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

This concert will benefit the Jewish Dialogue Group, a non-partisan,
grassroots organization founded in Philadelphia in 2001 to promote
constructive dialogue within Jewish communities about the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The JDG offers structured, facilitated
dialogue programs of many different kinds in synagogues, schools, and
other venues throughout the Philadelphia area. These programs help
people to talk with each other across political differences in
constructive ways and to sort through their feelings, ideas,
questions, and dilemmas. The JDG also provides resources that help
Jews around the country to conduct dialogue programs of their own.

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn was born on September 17, 1974 at her parents
then home on Westview Sreet in Philadelphia. The youngest of three,
Mirah grew up mostly in Bala Cynwyd.

In her waning teen years, Mirah moved to Olympia, Washington to attend
The Evergreen State College and found herself, four funny years later,
with a diploma in her hands and a festoon of flowers about her neck.
Continuing to reside in Olympia following graduation, she began making
music by default, teaching herself to play guitar and composing
'songs', releasing her first album Storageland on yoyo Recordings in
1997. Proudly joining the K record label in 1999, she began to
experiment with recording, producing some material by herself and also
working with her close friend and favorite person to record with ever,
Phil Elvrum. Several fantastic albums, "You Think It's Like This But
Really It's Like This" (K Records), "Advisory Committee" (K Records),
"Cold, Cold Water," & "Songs from the Black Mountain Music Project"
have since been released by Mirah on K. In March of 2004, her mostly
covers collaboration with the Black Cat Orchestra from Seattle,
entitled "To All We Stretch th
e Open Arm," was released on yoyo recordings
(http://www.yoyoagogo.com). Her newest release, c'mon Miracle, was
released on K in May of 2004.

Philadelphia native Emily Ana Zeitlyn fashioned The Weeds out of a
pile of overgrown vines: a constantly evolving group of sounds and
words volleying between spare rock drama and trickling melodies. The
songs are little movies filled with word pictures and up close
character studies. Joining Emily is super-fun drummer Sunday
Livingston aka Bobby Wolter. The Weeds have recently completed a new
album and have gallivanted around North America sharing the bill with
inspiring folks like The Microphones, Mirah, Karl Blau, Tigersaw and
Birdie Busch.

Renaissance Valentine Dance Revel

"Valentine's Day, when every fowl doth choose his mate" - Geoffrey
Chaucer, 1380

Come celebrate some Valentine's Day traditions from centuries past.

Both courtly (platonic) love and romantic love flourished on the
ballroom floors of Renaissance courts.

Hence, the Valentine's Day Revel, as celebrated during the time of the
Renaissance.

century English, and 16th century French] will be taught in the
afternoon and a Renaissance ball will be held in the evening.

Medieval or Renaissance clothing highly encouraged (free loaner
outfits available).

Live music will be provided by the renowned Bhakaili Branslers.

There will be dances for both the beginner and the expert.

This Valentine's Day weekend, The Cabal, The Rare Bird Show, and
Lunchlady Doris, Philadelphia's finest longform improv groups, perform
together for the FIRST time!
http://parentheticalnote.com/thecabal
http://www.rarebirdshow.com
http://www.geocities.com/lunchladydoris_improv

Longform Improvisation is based on ideas and philosophies developed by
actor/director/writer/teacher Del Close. Close essentially invented
long-form improvisation as we know it. Similar to the short-form
improv you've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", longform improv
relies on one audience suggestion, and nothing else, to create instant
comedy via a completely improvised comedy show. This event is hosted
by The Cabal, and features The Rare Bird Show, and LunchLady Doris.

Each group performs in and around the Philadelphia area. In addition
to Philadelphia, these groups have performed at the Upright Citizens
Brigade Theater in New York, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Pittsburgh.

Credits include appearances on television, film, radio, and on the
web. The 2004 Philadelphia Fringe Festival was home to all three
groups at such diverse venues as Pierre's Costumes, O'Neals Pub, and
The Philadelphia Ethical Society.

This is an opportunity for audiences to experience highly-skilled
longform improv here in Philadelphia - New York quality with a local
commute. This event features local talent, further advancing the
Philadelphia improv community! Watch the freshest faces in the area
turn your suggestion into a montage of hilarious scenes that connect
in the most surprising ways.
