Fri. Feb. 11, 9pm The Philadelphia Science Fiction Society (PSFS) hosts guest speaker Danielle Ackley-McPhail. The youngest of five children, Danielle Ackley-McPhail began devouring books at a very young age and eventually developed the talent for telling tales of her own. This love of the written word has followed her throughout her life. She has shared her time and talent with various literary publications, including The Cantilever; The literary journal of Florida Southern College; The Grubstreet Writer, the literary journal of Kean College of NJ; The Taj Mahal Review, published by Cyberwit; and The Amazing Instant Novelist, an on-line writing area sponsored by America Online. Her work has also appeared in the November 2002 and February 2003 issues of Sabledrake Magazine (www.sabledrake.com) and is included in the anthologies Through a Glass Darkly (released by Lite Circle Publications), Voyages - An Anthology of World Poetry, Passion - An Anthology Of The World's Great Short Stories and The Postmodern Temperaments: Fifteen Poets published by Cyberwit. With Bachelors Degrees in both English and Communications from Kean College of NJ, she has worked in the publishing industry for the past eight years. She is currently employed as a Production Manager for Music Sales Corporation. In her first novel, Yesterday's Dreams, she explores the rich mythology of her Celtic heritage and her own longtime fascination with fantasy. At the turn of the new year, she completed the sequel, Tomorrow's Memories, and is currently looking for a home for it. Danielle lives in New York with her husband, Mike, mother-in-law Teresa, and three extremely spoiled cats. PSFS holds monthly meetings to discuss and promote science fiction and fantasy in literature, the arts, and popular culture. In addition, PSFS sponsors an annual science fiction conference, called Philcon, and has many other special interest events, such as the Book Discussion Group, which meets monthly to discuss a work of science fiction or fantasy; and the Special Events Group, which attends science fiction and fantasy movies and other events. http://www.psfs.org Guest speaker at 9pm. Feb. 13, 7:30pm The Cabal, The Rare Bird Show, and Lunchlady Doris, Philadelphia's finest longform improv groups, perform together for the FIRST time! Longform Improvisation is based on ideas and philosophies developed by actor/director/writer/teacher Del Close. Close essentially invented long-form improvisation as we know it. Similar to the short-form improv you've seen on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", longform improv relies on one audience suggestion, and nothing else, to create instant comedy via a completely improvised comedy show. This event is hosted by The Cabal, and features The Rare Bird Show, and LunchLady Doris. http://parentheticalnote.com/thecabal/ http://www.rarebirdshow.com http://www.geocities.com/lunchladydoris_improv/ Each group performs in and around the Philadelphia area. In addition to Philadelphia, these groups have performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Pittsburgh. Credits include appearances on television, film, radio, and on the web. The 2004 Philadelphia Fringe Festival was home to all three groups at such diverse venues as Pierre's Costumes, O'Neals Pub, and The Philadelphia Ethical Society. This is an opportunity for audiences to experience highly-skilled longform improv here in Philadelphia - New York quality with a local commute. This event features local talent, further advancing the Philadelphia improv community! Watch the freshest faces in the area turn your suggestion into a montage of hilarious scenes that connect in the most surprising ways. Feb. 15, doors 6:30pm RESCHEDULED FROM Wed. 1/26. The Philadelphia Chapter of Billionaires for Bush Present THE CORPORATION (2004, Color, Canada, in English, 145 minutes) http://billionairesforbush.com http://www.zeitgeistfilms.com A darkly amusing account of the institution's evolution as a legal "person," THE CORPORATION is a powerful indictment of the roots of corporate power. So, what kind of person is it? The filmmakers conclude that a person whose prime directive is to produce ever-increasing profit for its shareholders -- regardless of the cost to people or the planet -- fits the diagnostic criteria of a psychopath. One hundred and fifty years ago, the corporation was a relatively insignificant entity. Today, it is a vivid, dramatic and pervasive presence in all our lives. Like the Church, the Monarchy and the Communist Party in other times and places, the corporation is todayÕs dominant institution. But history humbles dominant institutions. All have been crushed, belittled or absorbed into some new order. The corporation is unlikely to be the first to defy history. In this complex and highly entertaining documentary, Mark Achbar, co-director of the influential and inventive MANUFACTURING CONSE NT: NOAM CHOMSKY AND THE MEDIA, teams up with co-director Jennifer Abbott and writer Joel Bakan to examine the far-reaching repercussions of the corporationÕs increasing preeminence. Featuring interviews with CEOs and top-level executives from some of the world's largest corporations and critical thinkers: Noam Chomsky, Peter Drucker, Milton Friedman, Naomi Klein, Vandana Shiva, Steve Wilson, Jane Akre and muckraking filmmaker Michael Moore. Winner of the AUDIENCE AWARD for DOCUMENTARY in WORLD CINEMA at the 2004 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL and numerous other awards including 7 audience choice awards. Based on the book: "The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power" by Joel Bakan. Billionaires for Bush is a grassroots network of corporate lobbyists, decadent heiresses, Halliburton CEOs, and other winners under George W. Bush's economic policies. Headquartered in Wall Street and with over 60 chapters nationwide, we'll give whatever it takes to ensure four more years of putting profit over people. After all, we know a good president when we buy one. _______________________________________________________ Fri. Feb. 18, 8pm SHARP Gate to Moonbase Alpha (GTMBA) ambient/experimental series for music and performance Every 3rd Friday Featured this month: The Ministry of Inside Things ( http://www.starsend.org/moit ) Near The Caution Curves ( http://www.thecautioncurves.com ) The Great Quentini (2 sets; http://www.gaian-mind.com/quentini.htm ) VJ Large Marge (http://www.familyofshame.org/inner-family/rich/index.shtml ) A vegetarian snack buffet will be provided for all. THE MINISTRY OF INSIDE THINGS, consisting of electronic musician Chuck van Zyl and electric guitarist Art Cohen, are considered among the most innovative of US synthesists today. Influenced by the early music of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Ash Ra Tempel, their spacemusic has been described as linear, leading the listener across many sonic terrains. Based on improvisation, The Ministry Of Inside Things creates electronic realizations that flow from theme to theme, with the experience often lasting up to two hours. Through use of textures and atmospheres as well as harmony, rhythm and melody, the group transports the audience on an internal sonic excursion. Chuck van Zyl has been recording electronic music and performing live for over 15 years, but is perhaps best known for hosting one of the country's most successful radio shows of electronic music, STARS' END, for the past 20 years. van Zyl has released two CDs of spacemusic on the Centaur label, Celestial Mechanics and The Relic, plus The Sound Museum (with Gulch + Rath) out on the Groove label. His collaborative effort with Peter Gulch, Regeneration Mode, was released on their own Synkronos label. Art Cohen has been pushing the limits of the electric guitar in the studio and in live performance for well over 15 years. NEAR: Solo artist Sean Moore aka Neear 1977 aka Mikenear blends a range of electronic, Middle Eastern, Latin, African, and North American styles to hardcore, throttling beats, and chest thumping bass. Feb. 19, 8pm The Grassroots Artists MovEment (G.A.ME) Presents Raheem from Random Beats Tatennet Dirt Network Leftly from Plead the Fifth Sam Urgent Paradocs Halim Versus "The Grassroots Artists MovEment (G.A.ME) was spawned with the need to consolidate power with the Hip-Hop community by building a HIP-HOP UNION . At the same time the need for empowerment is prevalent within the Black and Brown community. The two groups correlate in various ways. Although HEALTHCARE is lacking throughout the U.S., Black and Brown people find it more difficult to access quality healthcare in their own community at a disproportionate rate to Whites; and most artists do not have healthcare because the music industry has a policy of not insuring artists. Hip-Hop was created by both the Black and Brown community. It makes sense for G.A.ME to unionize artists and organize the community to utilize the rich resources of Hip-Hop culturally and financially to improve our livelihood. That's our goal! The name Grassroots Artists MovEment (G.A.ME) has become an anomaly since we go beyond empowering the artist community. G.A.ME organizes youth and the Hip-Hop community to prevent juvenile detention and jail recidivism and raise youth leadership to a higher level. A main objective of G.A.ME is making healthcare accessible to the poor working class community in urgent need. Visit a G.A.ME Local closest to you or contact us about becoming a leader in your community." http://www.kickgame.com _______________________________________________________ Sun.
