Thu. March 3 8pm An evening of surrealist and avant garde films in honor of artist Salvador Dali and the Dali exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Featuring work (shown on DVD) by Russian filmmaker Yevgeniy Yufit, and others. Mr. Yufit's photography and film work is also featured at Pageant Gallery, 607 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia. This one man show is entitled Necrorealism : The photography and films of Yevgeniy Yufit, and runs now through April 3. Mr. Yufit is a native of Saint Petersburg, Russia. A unique presence in the world of art cinema, in 1985 he founded Russia's first independent film studio. He became a leading figure in the Soviet alternative art movement as well as one of the principal practitioners of âparallel cinema.â Yufit's early works are marked by an outlandish mixture of slapstick and the macabre and fueled by an overtly punk ethos. In addition to imaginatively capturing the madness and existential absurdities of late-Soviet life, his films evoke an alternately transparent and opaque world of the psyche as it traverses the frontier between life and death. His works have been selected numerous times for major international film festivals in Europe and North America including Montreal, Locarno, Toronto, Moscow, Rotterdam, and Rimini. This event will also provide an encore screening of Un Chien Andalou, Entr'acte, and Ballet Mechanique, which were shown to a full house on February 23. Un Chien Andalou (1929, Dir. Luis BuÃuel, 16 mins., B & W, shown on DVD): Acclaimed as a surrealist masterpiece, Un Chien andalou aggressively disconnects itself from narrative flow. The creators of this short film. Luis BuÃuel and Salvador DalÃ, fully intended there to be no links between successive scenes. Fortunately this didn't inhibit their dreaming up of some of the most striking moments ever to be projected upon the silver screen. Ballet Mechanique (1924, Dir. Fernand Leger, 15 mins., B & W, shown on VHS): With cinematography by Dudley Murphy and Man Ray, Fernand Leger weaves images of geometric shapes and humans into a symbolic Freudian dance. Entr'acte (1924, Dir. Renà Clair, 22 mins., B & W, Starring Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Erik Satie, shown on VHS): A classic French silent film of dance and Dada, this film was produced by French dance company Les Ballet Suedois, and stars them as well, mourning the loss of their star dancer Jean BÃrlin. An outrageous funeral procession is mounted, with the hearse being pulled by a camel. On the way up an incline, the hearse breaks loose, and all the mourner/dancers give terribly graceful chase. When the hearse finally stops, the "deceased" rises again for a terrific solo. Read more. This event is being co-sponsored by Pageant Gallery. This year's WOMYNSFEST will feature local and national seasoned and neophyte performers who identify as female. The event is open to male performers as well, but with females in the lead. Performances are meant to highlight females, not degrade males, and the goal of the event is to make males and females of all ages, backgrounds, and proclivities feel welcome. Another goal of WOMYNSFEST is to raise breast cancer awareness. At the beginning of each festival day, The Breast Cancer Portrait will screen. This documentary by Vitamin D follows artist Clarity Haynes and her unique subject matter-women from the neck to the navel. These portraits show breast cancer survivors and healthy women alike. Clarity asks each woman to share a story about her experiences with her breasts. In general, the stories are extremely touching, especially those from women who have endured mastectomies. Clarity helps women to realize their inner and outer beauty despite society's skewed ideas of aesthetics. Madi, Jane and Kathleen are some of the womyn interviewed in the film. March 17 8pm Ars Nova Workshop Presents Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre and The Light with Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre, tenor sax Jesse Dulman, tuba Adam Lane, bass Ravish Momin, drums, percussion, tabla http://www.arsnovaworkshop.com Multi-reedist Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (b.1936) is a founding member of Chicago's AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). In the early '60s, he participated in the first AACM configuration, the Experimental Band with pianist and mentor Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell and Malachi Favors. Under the leadership of Mitchell, 'Sound' (Delmark Records) - the seminal first document of this new movement - was recorded in 1966. Subsequent AACM recordings included Abrams' 'Level and Degrees of Light' (featuring Kalaparush) and 1969's 'Humility in Light of the Creator', McIntyre's first recording as a leader with Leo Smith and John Stubblefield. Eventurally making New York City his home throughout the '70s, McIntyre played the burgeoning loft scene, frequently at Riveba studios with Sam Rivers. He spent much time teaching and composing at Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio, occasionally with Jack DeJohnette. Since the late 90's, he has performed and reco rded with more frequency. Tonight, he is accompanied by tuba player Jesse Dulman, bassist Adam Lane (John Tchicai, Barry Altschul), and percussionist Ravish Momin (Susie Ibarra, Trio Tarana, Sabir Mateen). _______________________________________________________ Fri.
