Ars Nova Workshop Presents Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre and The Light with Kalaparush
Maurice McIntyre, tenor sax Jesse Dulman, tuba Adam Lane, bass Ravish Momin, drums,
percussion, tabla
http://www.arsnovaworkshop.com

Multi-reedist Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (b.1936) is a founding member of Chicago's AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). In the early '60s,
he participated in the first AACM configuration, the Experimental Band with pianist and mentor Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell and Malachi Favors. Under the leadership of Mitchell, 'Sound' (Delmark Records) - the seminal first document of this new movement- was recorded in 1966. Subsequent AACM recordings included Abrams' 'Level and Degrees of Light' (featuring Kalaparush) and 1969's 'Humility in Light of the Creator', McIntyre's
first recording as a leader with Leo Smith and John Stubblefield. Eventurally making New York City his home throughout the '70s, McIntyre played the burgeoning loft scene, frequently at Riveba studios with Sam Rivers. He spent much time teaching and composing at Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio, occasionally with Jack DeJohnette. Since the late 90's, he has performed and reco
rded with more frequency. Tonight, he is accompanied by tuba player Jesse Dulman, bassist Adam Lane (John Tchicai, Barry Altschul), and percussionist Ravish Momin (Susie Ibarra, Trio Tarana, Sabir Mateen).

HOMAGE TO OHM
For his most ambitious project in his 20+ year, wildly eclectic career, Patrick Stacey has constructed a one of a kind sound control station, painstakingly sampled the pioneers of early electronic music, and created an experimental audio abstraction unique in its history, form, and presentation.
A project going into its second year, Patrick started by delving into the roots of his life long passion, electronic based sound, and came across a three disc compilation recently released by Ellipsis Arts entitled "OHM: the early gurus of electronic music". Using computer based digital signal processing technology, Patrick methodically extracted hundreds of sound bites from throughout the collection, loaded them into a performance based application from Ableton software called "Live", and slowly put together a piece that is all at once an improvisation, a tribute, a science, and an art.
Needing a bit more than his I-Mac laptop to execute his vision, Patrick enlisted the help of his father and designed and built a custom control desk to transport and present his medley of devices in a user friendly and efficient system that not only adds to the experience, but inspires it. KATASTATIK
From his web site: âI'm Mandra, I used to play guitar for the now dormant great mutant skywheel. I do play guitar (and the manDrum) for the remarkable telesma, I do a lot of improvised music with people and machines as Katastatik or the manDrum, quite often playing breakbeats and Drum N Bass on my body with a trigger suit and computer program I've created... I've been doing electro-acoustic music since the early '80s, and began integrating orchestral instruments and interactive computer technology in the '90s, all while playing in various bands, writing music for theater pieces, indie films, installation art projects, and having music I'd written played at conferences in exotic locations populated by well meaning but dull people that I feel lucky to have escaped from. I love sound.â
In addition to making music and performing live, Mandra hosts/curates/participates in the defDumbAndBass fREAKoUT, a âBaltimore monthly for disparate Baltimore area underground creative/experimental/artist/musicians to meet, hang out, present, represent, discuss, show, show-off, inform, inspire, educate and display what they're thinking, doing, and what they think people should know about. It costs nothing to join this collective - just participate - it grows out of an idea to unite elements of the [Baltimore] happening scene which exist in vacuums - music, writing, visual art, dance, any and all _expression_. His hope is that this could function as a thriving idea exchange, and provide a necessary outlet to the artistic community, and a viable inlet for the audience of same.â More info: http://defdumbandbass.com/

MY EVIL TWIN
Bernie Cox aka My Evil Twin, lives in Philadelphia, and  creates experimental emotive noise soundscapes that are beautiful and soft while linked to glitches, scratches, and spiking sound, making for texture in both music and aural experience. Believing in the need for performer-audience interaction, he curates The FeedBack Concert Series at the University City Arts League in West Philadelphia. This monthly series highlights musical artists performing new or seldom heard works.  FeedBack is designed to be an interactive event for both the listener and the performer with a short Q&A after each set. The organizers hope to create an intimate atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable to create a conversation that will continue to foster creative thoughts, ideas, and actions for both the audience and artist. More info: http://www.feedback-at-ucal.com/

THE GREAT QUENTINI (performance art)
There are many lines that can be and have been written about The Great Quentini, the shaman of the pasta strainer, the enlightened one who sees art  where others see trash, the only human with whom Barbie will truly converse, but our favorite description comes from a web page dedicated to Quentini:
Born in an obscure corner of Pennsylvania. Abducted by space aliens for cross cloning with Yeti. Twelve year residency at Dr Zorg's secret underground space station. Five year unexplained gap. Thirteen years in Philadelphia recovering from wounds received while fighting Gondar. In the words of an 8-year-old critic: "Don't be afraid Mom, he's just a Sacred Clown." More info: http://www.gaian-mind.com/quentini.htm

THEATRE OF THE MIND (live visuals)
Mark Baechtle, aka Theatre of the Mind, has been performing live in a variety of venues for many years.  Both his electronic music and psychedelic visuals are original creations which transport listeners and viewers to other worlds. For this event, Mark will provide visual backdrops only, to the performersâ musical sets. Undoubtedly, he will create live while adding some tried and true eye candy to enhance the sensory experience of each person in the audience.  More info: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

LINGUISTICS
Every last Saturday
http://www.soul-sanctuary.net

LINGUISTICS was originally conceived as a poetry slam, but we soon realized that Philadelphia was asking more from us than just another poetry competition. Our words move people, so we bear some responsibility for moving folks in a more positive direction. Thus, we've revised the LINGUISTICS vibe to that which promotes more social action. Come out with your spoken word, your rhymes, your monologues or your songs and let's speak peace and power into existence! We're looking for your thought-provoking and inspiring pieces to get us geared up to go out and spread good news to all within earshot.

Sat. April 2
8pm

An evening of surrealist and avant garde films in honor of artist Salvador Dali and the Dali exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Featuring work (shown on DVD) by Russian filmmaker Yevgeniy Yufit, and others.

Mr. Yufit's photography and film work is also featured at Pageant Gallery, 607 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia. This one man show is entitled Necrorealism : The photography and films of Yevgeniy Yufit, and runs now through April 3.

Mr. Yufit is a native of Saint Petersburg, Russia. A unique presence in the world of art cinema, in 1985 he founded Russia's first independent film studio. He became a leading figure in the Soviet alternative art movement as well as one of the principal practitioners of âparallel cinema.â Yufit's early works are marked by an outlandish mixture of slapstick and the macabre and fueled by an overtly punk ethos. In addition to imaginatively capturing the madness and existential absurdities of late-Soviet life, his films evoke an alternately transparent and opaque world of the psyche as it traverses the frontier between life and death.

His works have been selected numerous times for major international film festivals in Europe and North America including Montreal, Locarno, Toronto, Moscow, Rotterdam, and Rimini.

This event will also provide an encore screening of Un Chien Andalou, Entr'acte, and Ballet Mechanique, which were shown to a full house on both February 23 and March 3.

Un Chien Andalou (1929, Dir. Luis Bunuel, 16 mins., B & W, shown on DVD): Acclaimed as a surrealist masterpiece, Un Chien andalou aggressively disconnects itself from narrative flow. The creators of this short film. Luis Buâuel and Salvador Dalâ, fully intended there to be no links between successive scenes. Fortunately this didn't inhibit their dreaming up of some of the most striking moments ever to be projected upon the silver screen.

Ballet Mecanique (1924, Dir. Fernand Leger, 15 mins., B & W, shown on VHS): With cinematography by Dudley Murphy and Man Ray, Fernand Leger weaves images of geometric shapes and humans into a symbolic Freudian dance.

Entr'acte (1924, Dir. Ren? Clair, 22 mins., B & W, Starring Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Erik Satie, shown on VHS): A classic French silent film of dance and Dada, this film was produced by French dance company Les Ballet Suedois, and stars them as well, mourning the loss of their star dancer Jean B?rlin. An outrageous funeral procession is mounted, with the hearse being pulled by a camel. On the way up an incline, the hearse breaks loose, and all the mourner/dancers give terribly graceful chase. When the hearse finally stops, the "deceased" rises again for a terrific solo.

This event is co-sponsored by Pageant Gallery.
