GENERAL: Coins

Frank A. De Lorenzo asked:

Could you send a list of all coins mentioned in the Talmud?

Thank you,
Frank A. De Lorenzo, Fayetteville, NC USA
----------------------------------------------
The Kollel replies:

Dear Frank,

Here is a partial list of coins from various Talmudic sources:

(a) Sela, Shekel, Dinar:
25 silver (i.e. normal) Dinar (a.k.a. Zuz) = 1 gold Dinar.
Maneh = 100 normal Dinar or 25 Shekel of the Torah (Bechoros 49b, see
Rashi and marginal commentary)
Sela Tzuri = 1 Shekel of the Torah (Kidushin 11b) or 2 normal Shekel
or 4 Dinar (Shevuos 43a) or 20 Aspar (Ma'aser Sheni 2:9).
Istera, a.k.a. Sela Medinah = 1/2 Dinar (Kidushin 11b)

(b) The Talmud in Kidushin 12a lists the following coins:
Dinar = 6 Me'ah = 192 Perutah
Me'ah = 2 Pundiyon
Pundiyon = 2 [Italian] Isar
Isar = 2 Musmis
Musmis = 2 Kuntrunk
Kuntrunk = 2 Perutah

Raban Shimon ben Gamliel (ibid.) lists:
Me'ah = 3 Hadris (Herodus?) = 24 Perutah
Hadris = 2 Hantz
Hantz = 2 Shamin
Shamin = 2 Perutah

(c) We find in Bava Kama 97b:
Abraham issued a coin that had the words Zaken and Zekeinah (Old man
and Old woman - alluding to Avraham and Sarah) on one side and Bachur
and Besula (Young man and Young woman - alluding to Yitzchak and
Rivkah) on the other side.

King Solomon issued a coin with the words David and Solomon on one
side, and Jerusalem the Holy City on the other side.

(d) In Bechoros 49b, 50a-b we find mention of:
The Hadrian gold Sela, the Trajan Sela, and the Shayafa coin (the
latter may simply refer to a slightly rubbed out coin).

(e) In Bava Kama 97b we find mention of:
Kozviyos (Bar Kokhba coins), Yerushalmiyos (Jerusalem coins)

By the way, what is your interest in Talmudic coins? Can we help you
with something specific?'

All  the best,
Reuven Weiner
