Mo'ed Katan 000: The Tosfos on Mo'ed Katan

Yeshayahu HaKohen Hollander asked:

>>Who wrote the Tosfot on Moed Katan?

The Kollel replied:
>>The Tosfos on Moed Katan is the work of a later Rishon, and it is
>>not clear who authored it. When he mentions "Tosfos ha'Rav," he
>>seems to be referring to TOSFOS RIVA, his teacher, as it seems from
>>Tosfos on 23a, DH Kol.

Mark Bergman comments:

The Kollel recently provided some clues as to the author of Tosfos on
Mo'ed Koton. Reb Elozor Reich of Manchester is somewhat of an expert
in this area; he says that to the best of his knowledge, Tosfos on
Mo'ed Koton was written by Reb Elchonon the son of the Ri. (The Ri
was the nephew of Rabbeinu Tam). He says that there is a whole sefer
about the Baalei Tosfos and their lives.

The Kollel replies:

Thank you. The Sefer "Ba'alei ha'Tosfos" was authored by Ephraim
Auerbach [1955]. On page 484 he attributes Tosfos on Moed Katan to
Rebbi Shmuel, son of Rebbi Elchanan (and grandson of RI ha'Zaken
Ba'al ha'Tosfos). He proves this from Tosfos 23a DH Rebbi Yehudah.

When Tosfos cites Tosfos ha'Rav, it is RIVAM (Talmid of the RIVA),
and when he cites Tosfos RA it is Rabeinu Avraham, Talmid of Rashbam,
in the names of their teachers.

The problem is that Tosfos mentions Rabeinu Peretz, who lived after
Rebbi Shmuel (Tosfos 7a DH Amar Rav Ashi, 13b DH Tavlin). Auerbach
doesn't know what to do with this so he changes the Girsa.

Maharshal (Tehuvos, #5) writes that this Ba'al Tosfos was quite late
and might be a student of Maharam (as Rabeinu Peretz was).

Be well,
Mordecai Kornfeld
