Re: General: Birkas ha'Mazon over wine

Chanoch Taub asked:
>>I was told that if there is mazumin you are required to bentsch over wine.
>>Others have said not required. What is the Halakah?

The Kollel replied:
>>The second opinion is that of the Zohar that says that one only Bentches on a
>>Kos if there is a Mezuman (this is also the opion of the ARI Z"L and the
>>Mekubalim).

Gedaliah Jawitz commented:

On this topic, I would like to share a part of the May 20th DAILYHALACHA.COM,
"Covering or Removing the Knives from the Table for Birkat Ha'mazon:

"The Kabbalists added that normally, when one eats a meal, he has on the table
four primary items: Sakin(knife), Melah (salt), Ochel (food), and Lehem
(bread). The first letters of these words spell the name Samael, the name of
the Satan. Before Birkat Ha'mazon, one removes the Sakin and brings in its
place a Kos (cup). The first letters then spell the name Michael, one of God's
special angels."

And in light of your answer I need to ask if these perhaps are just different
Mekubalim, or are they just not acting on the Samael/Michael concept unless
there is a Mezuman?

With Muchh appreciation,
Gedaliah Jawitz

The Kollel replies:

The REMA (182:2) says that, in defference to the opinion of the Zohar, if one
decides to be Machmir and Bentch on a Kos when there are less than three people
present, that he should not lift up the Kos but just place it before him. From
here we see that the Halachah according to the Zohar is specifically NOT to
Bentch unless there is a Mezuman.

In order to reconcile the Kabbalists that you quote, with this opinion of the
Zohar, we will have to say that one should always remove the Sakin from the
table which will at least remove the name of the Satan (one is left with
letters Mem, Lamed, Aleph - "Malei", full). But to get the full Tikun, one
must invite two people to his Seudah so that he can Bentch on a Kos and spell
out "Michael" (inviting guests to the Seudah would be in sync with Michael who
is related to the Midah of Chesed ("Mimini Michael").
