GENERAL: Bedekin at a wedding
yid asked:
Some have the minhag at a chasanah to have edim at the bedekin. I heard that
this is because there are rishonim who say the bedekin is the nissuin. Who
is this rishon? Also why do you need edim at the nisssuin? Ithought only at
the kiddusshhin ddo you need edim. Also why would these edim help? You
havent done the kiddushhin yett so even if the bedekin is the nisssuin you cant
do the nissuin yet? Thank you for spending the time annd effoort to
answer my questions

The Kollel replies:
Tosfos in Yoma (13b, DH "uli'Chada") holds that the Bedekin is retroactive
Nisu'in after a Kidushin takes place. This opinion is quoted by the Rema (EH
55:1). However, many Acharonim, such as the Aruch ha'Shulchan (EH 55:10), hold
that even Tosfos means this is the beginning of the Nisu'in process, not a full
fledged Nisu'in.
There is in fact an argument regarding whether or not witnesses are required
for Nisu'in. The Aruch ha'Shulchan (EH 55:5) says that it "possibly" does not
require witnesses, though he is not certain. It seems that the possibility that
Nisu'in does require witnesses is that if Kidushin requires witnesses, perhaps
Nisu'in should too. There are indeed Halachic ramifications to her status
besides being permitted to her husband, such as being able to eat Terumah etc.
[Nisu'in k'Hilchasam (vol. 2, 18:22) says that many Poskim hold that witnesses
are required.]
All the best,
Yaakov Montrose
