General: Kidush Levanah
Ari Stern asked:
Someone recently asked me after Kiddush Levanah, why is it that we say Sholom
Aleicheim b'lashon rabim?
also why do we say sholomaleicheim at all by kiddush levanah?
thank you kol tuv,
ari stern

The Kollel replies:
Interestingly, according to the Rema, we say 'Shalom Alecha' (in the singular),
though, to my knowledge, this is not the Minhag anywhere. I assume that the
plural is a sign of respect, as one addresses a person who is senior to oneself
in Ivrit (and in Yiddish) in the third person.
Here are some of the many explanations cited by the Sidur Iyun Tefilah as to
why we greet at this point of Kidush Levanah:
He cites three in the name of the Eitz Yosef .
1. It is the result of the Simchah that we feel at having just greeted the
Shechinah.
2. Having just cursed our enemies (that dread should fall upon them), it is
befitting to assure our friends that nothing will happen to them, for they will
be blessed with peace.
3. Since the institution of accusation (prosecution) was introduced by the moon
at the creation (and that is what we are currently referring to), we announce
'Shalom Aleichem' in the form of a prayer that there should be no more such
accusations made, but that peace should reign.
See also 'Iyun Tefilah' and 'Anaf Yosef'.
Kesivah va'Chasimah Tovah!
Kol Tuv,
Eliezer Chrysler
