General: Siyum - Is Half a "Thanks" Enough?

In the Siyum that we make on every Mesechta we say the following in the second 
Yehi Rotzon.

After we thank Hashem for helping us finish this Mesechta, we then ask Him that 
"just like You helped us finish this Mesechta You should please help us to 
start and finish other Seforim and Mesechtas as well"!

Don't you think that if you ask His help to 'Start and Finish' new mesechtas; 
that He has already helped you to 'start and finish' this present Mesechta. So 
wouldn't it be  proper to thank Him for helping you to start this Mesechta as 
well?!

Or is 1/2 a "Thanks" good enough?!

The Kollel replies:

One must thank Hashem for starting the Masechta as soon as he begins it. At the 
Siyum, it is late for such a thanks.... 

This very thanks, btw, would seem to be included in the "Modeh Ani" Tefilah of 
Rebbi Nechunyah ben Hakaneh, which one is meant to recite every day after 
learning. (It is printed in most Gemaras.)
