Subject: Learning 70 Languages, Fat that doesn't Rot, Shamir
Chaim Marenberg-Friedman <marenbe...@yahoo.com.ar> asked:
Shalom, Shavua tov.
I have more question today:
1)Once time i heard that Yosef ha'Tzadik learned 70 idioms in one night. Where
does it appears? Is it a midrash? If it was mamash, he was a great Navi. I also
knew about that Moshe Rabeinu translated the Torah into 70 idioms. Where does
it appears?
2) On Baba Metzia 83a appears the case where Rebbi Eleazar tested himself. he
removed fat from his stomach and put it in the hot sun, and it it did not rot.
I heard that the body of tzadikim do not rot after they live them... evidence
has been told about that in recent years. (i remember i read something of it,
in books written by the Rebbi Twerski). Tell me.
How should i take this event on the Talmud? Mamash, it was a physical event? or
not?
3) Why didn't Rambam wrote about the shamir on Mishne Torah, like one of the
element to be used to construct the beis ha'Mikdash?
4) Sanhedrin 65b appears a case where Rava created an animal using the sefer
ha'yetizira. As always the question is: Was it a physical event? or it was an
aggadah?

The Kollel replies:
1) The story about Yosef - you will find in Gemara Sotah 36b. Regarding Moshe -
see Rashi to Deuteronomy 1:5
2) It certainly sounds like a physical event. But I am willing to listen if you
want to suggest another interpretation.
3) Excellent question. Your question is raised by the classic commentator known
as "Mishneh la'Melech" (in Hilchos Klei ha'Mikdash 9:7). The Keren Orah (in his
commentary to Sotah 48a) answers that according to the Rambam, the Shamir is
only needed for a "Mitzvah Min ha'Muvchar". That is, one should us it if
possible in order to do the Mitzvah in the very best way. Since it is almost
impossible to acquire a Shamir, the Rambam did not find it logical to suggest
that it is a necessary building component for the Mikdash.
The Rambam did not even record that it is "better" to use the Shamir, according
to the Keren Orah, because the Rambam did not think anyone would have access to
it. (See Mishnah Sotah 48a; "The Shamir has been hidden since the Mikdash was
destroyed.")
4) Rava created a person (= a Golem). Rashi says that he used Sefer Yetzirah,
so it sounds like Rashi is reading this literally. So once again, the answer is
that it sounds literal, but I guess you can suggest other explanations if you
wish. (Weren't there Gedolim in recent years who made Golems?). Was it just the
first robot?
Best wishes,
Mordecai Kornfeld
