i haven't done it yet, but i was planning to hook rda to marc in a database i keep of marc fields. that would allow me to output an rda-to-marc. the documents unfortunately take shortcuts, like:

300
 $a
 $b

so i want to turn this into a list of tags and subfields, which is what's in my db

300/a
300/b

if that would be useful for you, it'll motivate me.

I've begun what may be a very slow process to create an actionable map from RDA to MARC. Although Appendix D has the mapping between them as text, the mapping isn't rigorous. In addition, it becomes obvious that RDA and MARC function at different levels of granularity, such as:

$a Personal name

*9.2.2 Preferred Name for the Person*

$b Numeration

*9.2.2 Preferred Name for the Person*

Some of the elements that we might need are found in FRAD, not RDA.

I may give up on this, but it seems to be the only way to know whether we can create a record from RDA that is interoperable with legacy data. I'm not looking to match MARC 1-to-1, but it will be good to know what the differences are.

Just curious, what do you mean by "actionable map"? Can I see what
you've done so far?

If anyone has gone further along in this exercise, I'd like to hear from you.
