I recently read in your Ask Aish column about the idea of all Jews being one people with one collective soul. I am involved in a project called OPERATION REFUAH which believes in this as well. This organization was started about two years in response to the tremendous amount of cholim in the Jewish community. Our goal is to promote Ahavat Yisrael among all Jews in the hope that it will bring merit to the cholim as well as attempt to prevent more tragedies and illness. Please be aware that we do not ask anyone for donations sent to us. On the contrary, we promote tzedaka giving to a person's own favorite charity as a zechus for an anonymous ill person. We are presently embarking on Phase Two of our project, which asks Jews around the world to focus on the mitzvah of V'Ahavta L'Reyacha Kamocha - Love your neigbor as yourself. We have a petition/scroll entitled "Chaverim Kol Yisrael" - All Jews are Friends, which states that we are indeed One People with one heart and one soul. All those who sign on will have their names brought to the Kotel each Rosh Chodesh, as well as be listed on our website. In addition, we give participants an opportunity to send us the name of someone who is ill, which we then sent to another caring Jew who has agreed to give tzedaka in this person's merit for a refuah shelaima.(We all will give tzedaka on behalf of a Jew whom we do know, but to give tzedaka for a Jew whom we do not know is on a higher madraga, and one of the many ways to fulfill the mitzvah of V'Ahavta L'Reyacha Kamocha.) We have a website at www.operationrefuah.org and our e-mail is [EMAIL PROTECTED] We are hoping that perhaps mention of our project can be made on your website. Any assistance that you can offer would be most appreciated. Operation Refuah is endorsed by Rabbi E.M. Teitz of Elizabeth, NJ as well as by Rabbi Mordecai Tendler of New York. I would just like to end by saying that one of your readers wrote that our enemies do not distinguish between different kinds of Jews....neither does illness. Illness has a way of drawing Jews from different backgrounds together. Perhaps if we show Hashem that we are willing and able to demonstrate Ahavat Yisrael without being under tragic circumstances, then He will remove these tragedies forever from our midst.
