Hi Davor,
You really have a knack for zeroing in on all of the most angst-
ridden parts of the UI!
We agonized over the mini-calendar preview-pane for a long time back
in April 2006 and the conclusion we came to was the following:
+ In the calendar area, it makes sense to display 'Today's events'
because users can see the events on the seleted mini-calendar day in
the main-calendar area. This also allows people to keep an eye on
'Today's' events while their browsing around the calendar.
+ In the non-calendar app areas, the preview-pane is a great way to
navigate around the calendar without actually having to switch context.
+ In the All app area, the Dashboard displays Today's events as
alarms fire and start-times pass.
+ Not all events will show up in the Task and Mail app areas, but I
don't expect users to be 'sitting' in those app areas. However that
is just my supposition. Do you find yourself spending long stretches
of time in those areas?
+ As for showing Today's Tasks, I wonder if a better solution might
not be to 'tickle' items into the NOW section at the beginning of the
day, rather than at a particular alarm time and/or start time.
Does this make more sense? Perhaps navigating around the mini-cal to
'preview' events is not so important. Does anyone else have any
thoughts on this? Do any other dogfooders use this functionality?

------- Davor reported 2007-01-23 09:43 PST -------
"Today's events" are shown only in the Calendar app area. One
important use
case in task management is to mark a task due on a certain date. In
Chandler,
this is done by stamping the task as an event (i.e., to "attach a
tickler"), so
wouldn't it be useful to keep the today's events visible in the
Tasks and the
Dashboard as well? As a bonus feature, "Today's events" could
change to
"Today's tasks" when in Tasks.

The connection between the mini-calendar and the preview area is
subtle (I'm
curious if this makes sense once you know what's happening).
In the calendar view, you can look at a particular day's events by
navigating
to that day (by clicking in the minicalendar, scrolling weeks, or
by using the
currently-not-very-useful "jump to date" dialog). So we keep
"today's events"
always visible in the preview area.
In the table view, the only way to view a day's events is in the
preview area,
so when you click a day in the mini-calendar, it renders a preview
of the
selected day in the mini-calendar.
Perhaps an enhancement would be to title the preview area with the
selected
day, to make this more clear?
