Hi,It's generally thought that the reason was so you wouldn't plug the mic into the headfone or key jack & vice versa. Damage could occur to the mic element in some cases.

I don't recall seeing this question asked but why did the Drake Co. choose to use a smaller mic jack on the T-4 line?
