java.lang.OutOfMemoryError - is that you need to increase the JVM maximum heap
size, for TOMCAT.

A fix, depending upon the version of JDK your running, in my case running
Linux, JDK 1.5.0_07

If you have a look in your apache-tomcat-5..5.17/bin directory there will be a
'startup.sh' that refers to the 'catalina.sh'. Have a look in there and there
will be an environment variable called JAVA_OPTS. That's the variable where you
can set the heap size when TOMCAT is started up, minimum and maximum values.

So to test it out, stop TOMCAT( shutdown.sh), set the JAVA_OPTS, like this

Export JAVA_OPTS='-Xms256m -Xmx512m'

And restart TOMCAT (startup.sh)

In this case, min heap size 256m and max 512k. The default sizes are apparently
quite small.

If it works, fine, if it doesn't, like the DSpace menu won't display, shutdown
TOMCAT, reset the JAVA_OPTS ( I just logoff and logon ) and restart TOMCAT and
try something else.

There are some interesting explanations if you google this.
