[about auto sensing connection methods] How about this approach? Maintain a ~/.tramprc file with, say, an alist with the associations between hosts or tags and connection methods. A normal tramp connection would read this file (if present) to determine the methods. The file could be maintained by hand but I'd hope that it would be updated programatically. Something like tramp-explore-connections-to- host. That would be done as a separate operation to normal tramp connections.
