Bleah! My own personal .emacs file has 4 or five lines adding to auto-mode-alist (depending on the machine) and batches of keyboard-macros and command lines that are useful to me. If you're going to castrate your horse, ride a mule! vc-mode, zone-mode, all these things are too useful to me,and on a modern machine the load is negligible.
