Congratulations to ESA and all involved in this amazing new entry in the history of exploration! We hope you had a chance to follow Huygens descent with The Planetary Society's Weblog, live from mission control in Darmstadt, Germany. If you weren't one of the nearly half million people who visited The Planetary Society website in January and haven't yet seen the amazing images, viewed the descent movie, or read any of the latest science updates, explore the Saturn system with us at: http://planetary.org/saturn/index.html And, as always, stay tuned for more mission coverage at: http://planetary.org ______________________________________ LISTEN TO THE SOUNDS OF TITAN FROM THE HUYGENS "MICROPHONE" The Planetary Society has teamed up with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Huygens Atmospheric Structure Instrument team to bring you the sounds recorded by the Huygens probe during its harrowing descent through Titan's atmosphere. New versions are being posted as The Planetary Society's acoustics expert Greg Delory refines his processing techniques. Listen to the sounds of Titan at: http://planetaryorg/sounds/huygens_sounds.html ______________________________________ NOT A MEMBER YET? Join The Planetary Society today. Our grand prize winner, 15-year-old Chelsey Tyler, traveled to the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, where the Huygens spacecraft was controlled, for the encounter with Titan. The winning artwork was on display at Huygens Mission Control as Huygens completed its amazing mission. See the winning artwork at: http://planetary.org/saturn/artcontest.html ______________________________________ BRUCE BETTS, PLANETARY SOCIETY DIRECTOR OF PROJECTS TEACHES FREE ONLINE ASTRONOMY AND PLANETARY SCIENCE COURSE Get your introduction to astronomy and planetary science from Bruce Betts. In his own, inimitable way, he'll cover everything from galaxies and stars to each of the bodies in our solar system. Experts from around the country will join Bruce via videoconference and phone to describe their research and to take questions. Classes will be broadcast live on cable television in Southern California and the Internet every Monday and Wednesday from 3-4 PM. Internet viewers can log on to the webcast live. All broadcasts will be archived for later viewing. Read the syllabus and find out more at: http://planetary.org/bettsclass ______________________________________ PLANETARY SOCIETY BOARD ELECTS NEW OFFICERS The Planetary Society has named Neil deGrasse Tyson as its new Chairman of the Board. Bill Nye The Science Guy replaces Neil as Vice President. Tyson, an astrophysicist and director of New York's Hayden Planetarium, succeeds Bruce Murray, who is retiring as Chairman. Joining the Board of Directors is Laurie Leshin, The Dee and John Whiteman Dean's Distinguished Professor of Geological Sciences and Director of the Center for Meteorite Studies at Arizona State University. For the first time a space advocacy organization has given a presentation in Libya. We thank Andy for helping us to turn new minds onto the wonder and excitement of space exploration. "This was the most satisfying reaction I've had..." says Lound. "They hadn't seen anything like this before, and so I was opening their eyes. I walked away feeling the possibility that we have now opened up a whole peoples' eyes to space. It was like seeing the Moon for the first time through a telescope." http://planetary.org/news/2005/lound-andy_tps-volunteers.html ______________________________________ A CONVERSATION WITH DAVID SOUTHWOOD ESA SCIENCE DIRECTOR, CO-INVESTIGATOR -CASSINI DUAL TECHNIQUE MAGNETOMETER On Huygens' Astounding Journey to Titan... "It's not just about science for me. It's about exploration. We picked up all this data on the way down -- telling us such things as the science of the structure of the atmosphere, how much turbulence there is, how the winds are, how much the lightning there is." "Those are the kinds of things that will give us the primordial atmospheric science. Then there is the surface science which will open new vistas on this planet." "I am a human being -- and the idea of seeing somewhere we've never been before -- that's the compelling aspect ... We don't know when anyone is going to look at it again..."
