How often does a lightning stroke happen on Earth?

Every single day there are about ten million strokes of lightning
around our planet. That's more than 100 per second, on average.
There is some variation with seasons and weather patterns, of course.
Lightning strokes happen when air currents in a thunderstorm separate
large and small droplets of water or particles of ice. Because these
various suspended particles attract different amounts of electric
charge, different parts of the storm develop large charges.
When the electric charge becomes greater than the air's ability to
resist a spark, a lightning bolt flashes between two parts of the
cloud, or between the cloud and the ground. The charge of a bolt of
lightning can be up to 20 million volts.
