Since Brian has indicated several times that rewriting for Unicode would be a huge endeavour, maybe 'confirm everything' and 'delayed error messages' could alleviate the waiting. :) And what's your take on verification? Can any of the tools you mentioned compare checksums after copying, and then optionally delete the source?
