I prefer a longer BL fleece myself, but have heard from several breeders 
that it's hard to keep the longer fleeces clean and un-felted if they 
wait a full year between shearings.

This is true especially in the colder regions where it snows and they 
need to feed hay in the winter.
If you had year round grazing, it might not be so much of a problem.
