Hi Jack, It builds fine for me on 10.5 with either autoconf or autoconf2.5 (which are equivalent versions of autoconf), and also without any autoconf, but it fails for me with autoconf2.13 (with:
FATAL ERROR: Autoconf version 2.54 or higher is required for this script) This dependency is satisfied by autoconf and autoconf2.5 as they are both autoconf version 2.63. I don't know which of the successful builds actually work, perhaps all of them.... The package does not list any autoconf dependency or conflict. So, you cannot reproduce the error with autoconf2.13 installed?
