A shot in the dark, but in the past, I've run into proxy issues caused by my Netbeans. Not sure if Netbeans is your IDE or if this problem is even remotely related (this one bug stemmed from framework that's not part of j2me), but food for thought. Sometimes the IDE has proxy settings that override the application and really mess up normal logic.
