Netters,

Subject:        New AAPG Hedberg Conference in Vienna!

You are invited to attend the AAPG International Hedberg Research Conference entitled, "Origin of Petroleum -- Biogenic and/or Abiogenic and Its Significance in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Production," re-scheduled for July 11-14, 2004, at the Geoscience Technology Training Center on the campus of the University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria.

The conveners for the conference are Michel T. Halbouty (Michel T. Halbouty Energy Co.), Peter Odell (Erasmus University), Barry Katz (ChevronTexaco) and Ernest A. Mancini (University of Alabama). The purpose of the conference is to bring together exploration and production geoscientists, engineers and researchers from oil companies, mineral exploration companies, research institutes and academia to discuss evidence and data for the organic origin and abiogenic origin of petroleum, and the types of tests that could be designated to determine the mechanism for the formation of petroleum.  An understanding of the origin of petroleum is a crucial element in the design of successful hydrocarbon strategies and in oil and gas production.  See attached Conference Announcement for further discussion on the history of this topic.

The conference will be comprised of oral and poster presentations and discussion sessions.  Based on abstracts received, the conveners have organized a preliminary technical program that will promote the exchange of ideas, experiences, and challenges of current research efforts in this field. A copy of the preliminary program is enclosed.  There will undoubtedly be changes made prior to the conference, so an updated version will be sent to registrants at a later date, and a final copy will be available for participants at the conference. If you believe your presentation would be more effectively presented in a session other than the one in which it is presently assigned, please let us know.  Also, we need to have all presenters re-confirm your intent to participate in this conference.  If your plans have changed, or this new date does not work for you and you will no longer be able to attend, we need to know that so we can adjust the conference program as necessary.  Please send an e-mail by no later than March 1, 2004, to Ernie Mancini and/or Debbi Boonstra indicating if you will be presenting at this conference or not.

As you can see from this schedule, the conference starts with the arrival day being Sunday, July 11, and early registration held that afternoon.  The conference sessions will last until 6:30 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, July 12-13, and until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14.  PLEASE make your travel plans accordingly, so that you can gain full benefit from your participation in this conference.

Vienna is a multicultural, historic city located in northeastern Austria. There are many opportunities for activities, sightseeing and shopping in all parts of the city.  To learn more about the Vienna area, you can log on to any of the following websites.  These will give you more information on weather, attractions, historical sites and upcoming events.

The cost of the 3-day conference is (US) $550, if you register before May 14, 2004, but will go up to (US) $650 after that date.  This includes the conference itself, opening icebreaker, 3 lunches, coffee breaks, and abstract book.  (This is a significant reduction from the previous fees of (US) $780 and $880!)  We have reserved a block of rooms at the nearby Hotel Bellevue, and you will be responsible for making your own room reservations there.  A hotel reservation form is enclosed.  If you contact the Hotel by phone (43-1-31348-802) or Fax (43-1-31348-801), be sure to tell them you are with the AAPG group in order to qualify for our group rate of EUR 85 (single room, approx. US$100) per night or EUR 109 (double room, approx. US$128).  Please be sure to make your reservations before June 4, as that is when our room block expires.  Any reservations made after that date will be on a space-available basis, and may not be reserved at the group rate.

The opening cocktail icebreaker/reception for this conference will be held on Monday evening, July 12, from 6:30-8:00 p.m., following the final session that day.  Please plan to attend, as this will be a good time to meet and mingle with your fellow conference attendees.

We would also welcome suggestions as to others whom you may know that are actively working in this field, and who would be interested in participating in this conference.  Blanks are provided on the enclosed "Additional Names" form for you to provide us with those names and addresses.  You can also direct them to visit the AAPG website at www.aapg.org to find out more information about this conference.

Enclosed, please find the registration form for this conference.  Please note that the form must be accompanied by full registration fee at the time of registration.  Registrations for this conference are limited and must be received by May 14, 2004, to qualify for the pre-registration rate of $550.  Should it become necessary for you to cancel your registration, please notify us as soon as possible, so that we may offer your position at the conference to someone else.  Written notification of your cancellation to us by May 14, 2004, will entitle you to a refund of your registration fee (minus a $50 processing charge).  No refunds will be issued after May 14, 2003, and after that date, the registration fee will increase to $650.

If you wish to attend this conference, please send your completed registration form and full payment as soon as possible to the AAPG Education Department, P.O. Box 979, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA, 74101.  We look forward to your participation in this exciting conference, and should you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of the conveners, or Debbi Boonstra in the AAPG Education Department, at (918) 560-2630, FAX (918) 560-2678, or e-mail <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
