Having used it in a project, I would agree with that last statement, but
I should point out that GNUTLS does provide one semi-interesting feature
--- it allows the use of GPG keys as SSL certificates:

http://gnutls.org/openpgp.html

Of course, it's not compatible with any other implementation of SSL, but
if people are interested in using a web-of-trust security model instead
of the X509 sacred cow security model, it's a potential option.
