As of 7/27, the Saxonville Post Office in Pinefield Shopping Center is to
have a cutback in hours - Window hours 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. as well as closed
each day 1 - 2 p.m. Box lobby to open at 8 a.m.

The USPS has notified long time Saxonville window clerk Joe Arena that his
position has been abolished and he will be on an unassigned status and have
to bid on positions at the Rt. 30 post office. Joe has 19 years, 6 months
with the post office, by the way.

This leaves only one window clerk, Pamela, to (wo)man the Saxonville branch.

How she is going to be able to close and reopen the place to conform to the
1-2 p.m. lunch hour is an unfair challenge.

There are also personal safety issues, whether you are a lone male or
female, working there. Going postal, anyone?

My experience is that the place is using busy, with lines, and will be
busier once the new Ace Hardware store opens in the former Lincoln Discount
store. It's not the time to be cutting back on window service.

If you want to comment on the cutbacks, the USPS person to call is Anne
Harrison, Mgr. Consumer Affairs, 800-870-7276 x7706.

I called Rep. Markey's office and the response was that they were aware
there would be cutbacks at retail windows, but not at Saxonville. However,
they would look into it and mention that a new large store would be opening
in the strip mall that could increase traffic. I suggested that they ask
if at the least, the cutback in hours could be postponed until the impact
of Ace Hardware could be determined.
