I had the same problem. When ftp.proxy is checking for the 200 server ready reply and the server replies with a multi-line response, one starting with "200-" on the first line, ftp.proxy thinks that the first line where the 4th character is a space is the end of the greeting rather that the line starting with 3 digits followed by 1 space character. I posted a fix for this problem (and another) to this list only last Sunday (11th August) with a subject of: [Patch] Recognise multi-line 220 and 331 responses As I can't immediately see how to access an archive of this list from the web site I will send you the fix directly.
