MUMBAI: Saturday marks the start of the
<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Queer-Azadi-Week> Queer Azadi Week
in Mumbai with an array of events lined up to seek equal rights for sexual
minorities including <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/lesbian>
lesbian, gay, <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/bisexual> bisexual,
<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/transgender> transgender and
intersex (LGBTI) people.

The week-long celebrations will be ushered in with an Indian classical dance
recital to be held at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences followed by the
screening of award-winning queer films on Sunday. The festival will end with
a <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Gay-Pride> Gay Pride, the
highpoint of the jamboree, which will be flagged off from August Kranti
maidan on January 28. The first such march in Mumbai was held in 2008, and
subsequently, it had been organized on the weekend following Independence
Day, said Palav Patankar who is associated with Queer Azadi Movement a
collective of community-based organizations and individuals who that works
on <http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/LGBTI> LGBTI issues.

A Delhi High Court ruling in 2009 decriminalized homosexuality, marking an
encouraging landmark for the queer movement. "The judgment was a victory of
sorts as it acknowledged the existence of queer individuals in India. We now
hold the march on the weekend after Republic Day as our battle is now for
constitutional rights for queer individuals," says Patankar. Last year, the
march witnessed over 2,500 Mumbaikars come out in support and this time, the
number is expected to rise.

The week-long events will be flagged off at the Tata Institute of Social
Sciences on Saturday with an Indian classical dance festival that promises
to capture the kaleidoscopic essence of our dance forms. Also on the cards
is a screening of award-winning queer films on Sunday.

The city will also host a number of gay parties and fundraising events over
the week. tnn
