Towards the end I kept them separately in tubs with a peat moss base,

change the leaves when they decayed, changed the peat yearly to be on 
the safe side.  The second clutch of eggs (where one was good, sorta) 
was produced when I put the male and female together for a few weeks.  
Eggs were laid in the substrate.
As Bowfinger and others have pointed out, water is a critical issue with 
them. What water source are you using Chuck?
