Hm, I just looked that up
(http://blog.gluster.org/2013/08/how-far-the-once-mighty-sourceforge-has-fallen/)
and yeah, that is indeed sketchy.

I did move some of my own stuff from gitorious to gitlab, and UI-wise
I quite like it. I'm running a private install for our lab's
cryptography-related projects that have potential export-related
restrictions and can't be public. I didn't even try to install a
private instance of Gitorious since it was so complicated, although
that seems to have been improved for CentOS. I'm not particularly
bothered by the shutting down of gitorious due to the realities of
having to maintain two systems and the Gitorious team not joining
them, but I can see how that would leave a bitter taste. The fact that
Gitlab is MIT licensed but has more features in the proprietary
version (features that are really only relevant in enterprise, still,
having two editions provides a conflict of interest) unlike Gitorious
is disappointing though.

As alternatives to previously mentioned hosts, what about Fedora
Hosted? It requires submitting a ticket
https://fedorahosted.org/web/new, but provides Trac instead of Forge
like Savannah, if that's desired. Besides that, Savannah does seem to
be the best option that's not Gitlab and runs free software.
