The David and Lucile Packard Foundation (Foundation) is also focused on the challenge of sustainability. This fellowship program provides a mechanism for outstanding individuals to pursue project opportunities outside of academic institutions and offers a professional learning experience within the philanthropic sector
Job Description
This position is designed to provide research, strategic synthesis and analysis, and recommendations for specific projects in the Foundation's C&S Program and provide research that supports Woods’ goals of developing working solutions to key environmental issues. The focus of the role in 2008-09 is to explore and begin to implement opportunities to advance state-based and regional, multi-state action in support of the conservation objectives outlined under the West Coast Governor’s Agreement (WCGA) and the Joint Ocean Commission Reports (JOCI). The work will be a cross-programmatic effort within the Foundation, including the Fisheries, Science and California Coastal and Marine Initiative (CCMI) sub-programs, and in collaboration with the newly established Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford University. This work will involve: analysis of the need and opportunity for philanthropic investments; evaluation of alternative resourcing and grantmaking strategies for the West Coast; survey of donors, relevant government agencies, university institutions and NGOs currently working in the region; scoping and relationship building with new projects and potential grantees; and coordinating West Coast funder communication and coordination. The Research Fellow will also assist the Fisheries, Science and CCMI subprograms in carrying out due diligence on grants being considered by the sub-programs and will help to prepare grant summaries and grant files for grants recommended for approval. The Research Fellow will also work with the COS faculty and staff to identify relevant areas of collaboration. The results of the Research Fellow’s work will complement the knowledge and information available to grantees and other funders so as to increase overall
effectiveness in the field. Primary job responsibilities will include:
· Work with COS staff and C&S subprogram teams to conduct research and analysis on topics relevant to
West Coast coastal management and conservation.
· Provide written reports and/or give presentations about these projects to the COS, C&S and Foundation
staffs, grantees, and/or funding partners.
· Interact with Foundation and COS staffs, grantees, funding partners, government agencies, and content
experts as needed to complete assigned projects.
· Proactively engage in both the University and Foundation communities, acting as a bridge builder between Stanford and Foundation programs and staff; conduct one or more seminars at Stanford pertaining to the research or analysis being undertaken; and attend forums or workshops at Stanford
that are related to the Fellow’s work.
An interim report summarizing the Research Fellow’s results to-date will be produced at the mid-point of the fellowship and a final report summarizing the year's results will be submitted and a presentation of the project process, outcomes and lessons learned will be shared to staff at the close of the fellowship period. This position will be hired by and report to the Interim Director of the Center for Ocean Solutions at Woods
and take day-to-day direction from Foundation Program Officers.
The Foundation will provide office space in Los Altos, CA, office equipment, IT support, and expense reimbursement. Woods/Stanford University will administer the salary for this exempt position, medical benefits, vacation, and sick time. No housing or relocation benefits are included.
