Hi-I do water problem work on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. I had a student go down there with me recently who got interested in the enforcement (or non-enforcement) of environmental laws and regulations on the island. The Bahamas have a relatively good record when it comes to writing and enforcing laws in Nassau and on Grand Bahama Island. Her question was, why aren¹t they enforced on San Salvador and, presumably, on others of the ³out² islands. We¹ve pretty well exhausted our limited knowledge of where to look for information on this subject (as has our reference librarian) and so I¹d like to turn to you for help. We¹re interested in any studies that may have been done anywhere on this topic (rural vs. non-rural enforcement of environmental laws/regulations). Of course, our prime area is the Caribbean, but examples or studies from other developed or partially developed (in which category I put the Bahamas) countries would be good too. Anybody know anything about this? Thanks for your help. I¹m usually just a ³lurker² on this list, but, as a natural scientist, I find most of the exchanges lively, interesting, and informative.
