the following is posted at the request of professor kim smith of carleton college: This note is to announce the creation of a new professional organization for those of us who teach and do research in the area of environmental studies and environmental science. The purpose of the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences (AESS) is to serve the faculty, students and staff of the 1000+ interdisciplinary "environmental" programs in North America and around the world. We seek to strengthen teaching, research and service in environmental studies and sciences, and to improve communication across boundaries that too often divide the traditional academic disciplines -- the physical, biological, and social sciences, and the humanities -- that need to be brought to bear in understanding and dealing with environmental problems and solutions. The association works to support the professional development of Association members not just as individuals but also to advance Environmental Studies and Sciences as a whole. We intend this organization to be more broadly interdisciplinary than the existing environmental organizations, and to focus more on research and scholarship than does the Council of Environmental Deans and Directors. Toward that end, we plan to start an interdisciplinary journal and hold annual meetings that will offer opportunities to present research. The next one is tentatively scheduled for October 2009 in Madison, WI. If you're interested in joining, go to http://aess.info. There's is a small membership fee of $30. ********************** Dale Jamieson Director of Environmental Studies Professor of Environmental Studies and Philosophy Affiliated Professor of Law New York University http://philosophy.fas.nyu.edu/object/dalejamieson http://environment.as.nyu.edu/ Contact information: Steinhardt School, HMSS 246 Greene Street, Suite 300 New York NY 10003-6677 212-998-5429 (voice) 212-995-4832 (fax) "Bush says he gave up golf out of respect for war dead"--Minneapolis Star Tribune, May 13, 2008
