what did Gloria and Ermita want him to say? *"Shucks naman....."* Mar Roxas harked back to the "bomba" days of pre=Martial Law Plaza Miranda at the rally on Ayala Avenue last Friday. I think I like this new palengkero tough-guy image for Sen Roxas. Palengkera din naman kasi magsalita ang future First Lady niya. hahahaha! *Roxas: 'Oh my Gosh' was not appropriate* By TJ Burgonio Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 02:17:00 12/14/2008 MANILA, Philippines—Don't say bad words. Malacañang officials are sore at Sen. Manuel "Mar" Roxas II over his expletive-laced speech against the Arroyo administration at Friday night's anti-Charter change rally. "We are saddened that he stooped so low in his tirade," Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said Saturday in a text message. "We don't think his crass language will help in his desperate drive to catch up with the popularity ratings of other leading presidentiables." *"P----- Patayin ang Gloria-forever Cha-cha* (Expletive. Let us kill this Gloria-forever Charter change)!" Roxas hollered at Friday night's interfaith rally in Makati City. It was the strongest criticism from the senator who is reportedly running for president in May 2010 but has so far fared poorly in popularity polls among the presidential aspirants. *'OMG'* Asked why he had used such "colorful" language, Roxas explained: "Saying 'Oh my gosh,' 'Oh my golly' would have been inappropriate... I deliberately said it. That's how I felt... I think the people feel the same way," he said Saturday over radio station dwIZ. Without naming names, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said speakers who hurled expletives at the administration merely wanted to call attention to themselves. "They thought it was fashionable," he said Saturday in an interview. "Because it was a rally of the detractors of the President, they thought that anyone who stood up there to say something against the President would catch more attention." Administration Sen. Joker Arroyo, for his part, advised Roxas and other senators who joined Friday's rally to instead bring the fight against Charter change to the House of Representatives. "The battleground is not Makati, but the House," he said yesterday also over dwIZ. *Talk to the congressmen* Arroyo suggested that the senators meet with congressmen one on one, and talk them out of their support for a House resolution convening both chambers of Congress into a constituent assembly to rewrite the Charter. Talking with Charter change proponents would be more effective than speaking at rallies, said the former Makati City congressman. "It (attending rallies) is a waste of time," he said, pointing out that lawmakers would merely shrug off rallies mounted in Metro Manila because their constituents are based in the countryside. But Roxas disagreed: "Not at all. I think the people are sympathetic to our cause. Some may have failed to join the rally because of their work, but when the right time comes, they are there ready to support us." Arroyo wondered why the presidential aspirants among the senators were not as assiduous in leading rallies in support of the impeachment complaint against President Macapagal-Arroyo. "The reason could be that if the President is impeached, she will be replaced by Vice President Noli de Castro. And in the runup to the elections, he will have a good advantage over them. He will be a shoo-in for the presidency," he said. *Uncalled for* The public's reactions to Roxas' use of expletives were varied and mostly negative. Lawyer Jose Flores Jr., former president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Quezon, said they were uncalled for. "Statesmen of quality do not use gutter language to persuade people or drive the point. Gusto pa naman n'yang mag presidente. Di naman mga istambay at butangero ang sumama sa rally. Minus sa kanya 'yun. May reflection sa kanyang personality (And he wants to run for president? The rally was not attended by uncouth people. That's a minus on his part. It reflects badly on him)," he said. Former Cavite Vice Gov. Jonvic Remulla said: "His audience wasn't only the 7,000 people at the rally. There were millions watching on TV. I think he owes the public an apology." *Control emotions* Vice Mayor Gabriel Bordado of Naga City said Roxas might have been exasperated over repeated attempts of the Arroyo administration to push through with Cha-cha. "People are tired of these Cha-cha maneuvers. The government should instead focus on preparing for the trickle-down effect of the global economic meltdown next year," he said. Fr. Wilmer Joseph Tria, diocesan priest, Archdiocese of Caceres, and chair of the philosophy department of Ateneo de Naga University, said: "How can we win the fight against Cha-cha if we give in to our emotions?" Erik Masangkay, a businessman, said: "It's not right to be rude in front of many people. Roxas, being a senator and aspiring president of the Philippines, must act accordingly. Even if he is very angry, he must learn to control his emotions." With reports from Jonas Cabiles Soltes, Maricar P. Cinco, Gerald Gene Querubin, Delfin T. Mallari Jr., Madonna T.
