I guess it's the physician in me but I think we should use something that is at least half the size of the screen to reduce the error. I suggest we talk to the Gimp-Print people and come up with a nice paper-selection framework offering all sorts of paper sizes in use all over the world and use that in the image->new dialog, for printing and for the calibration dialog.
