I could be wrong and this key could be "customizable" too, but in my
experience, hitting the "r" key while inside an image changes your current
tool to "rectangular select" which I find to be the least "damaging" if you
accidentally click somewhere. Most of the toolbox actions fortunately DO have
shortcut keys. That's one useful feature that I use all the time. On the
downside though, I am not sure if those are documented anywhere. I haven't
seen the gimp-cheat-sheet postscript recently, since it hasn't been updated
from back in '98, but that mostly lists Ctrl+<whatever> shortcuts and mouse
actions, not listing the key bindings for the toolbox. I found most of my
toolbox keys by just pressing random ones and seeing what happens.
