Hi Eva !

Just a small tip on the above subject. My name is Tony Barros and I
reside in New Jersey. I am originally from Tanzania, where I managed
to get two birth certificates through an affidavit from the court.

Assuming the procedures are the same in the former East African
countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, this is what I had to
go through :-.

1)GO to the Registrar of Birth and Deaths and try to extract the
information you need. Having failed, I had to-

2)Go to the Hospital or Maternity Clinic you were born at and dig out
the info from their records (if they are still in tact). Remember, if
you were born before Kenya's independence - December 12, 1963, there
is every likelihood that they have the records, as it was not
mandatory for your parents to register with the Registrar of Births
and Deaths at that time. Having failed again, finally-

3) You will have to request somebody known to you who
is older than you to represent you in court and convince the judge
that you were born after him and that knows since you were born.
It must be borne in mind that you will need two people to spend a
full day in court -assuming there are no postponements. One to work
on the papers, and the other to convince the judge

However, if you have folks in Nairobi who have "wasta" (influence in
Arabic), and are prepared to "grease" a few palms, it should be
a "breeze".

rgds.
