Mario,
Unfortunately, in India, there is no such thing as
"life without parole". One either escapes, is let out
of prison due to overcrowding or because some
politician has plead the case.
Be that as it may, I am a firm advocate of the death penalty. Not because I believe in retributive justice or that I believe the death penalty is a deterrent. No, it is simply because I want these people to know that their lives are as insignificant as they deemed others to be. There was a case, a while back of a heinous rape and murder of a young girl. The man was sentenced to death. A very rare occurrence in India. When the time came for the penalty to be executed, there were protest from all the relevant NGOs. What was most despicable to me, is the way the man himself squealed and pleaded through his lawyer for mercy. I'm sure the girl he raped and killed too had pleaded for mercy. Unfortunately she didn't have a lawyer at the time or a well meaning NGO. As her life ebbed away, I'm sure the coward smiled or perhaps lay by her side satiated. He was a coward in life. He was a coward in death.
