GOA-US FLIGHT BY SEPT 2003: Direct flights to and from Goa to the Gulf
countries, Europe and the United States of America will materialize by
September 2003, with presently the charter flights being opened to all
Non-Resident Indians. Tourism in the State will receive a short in the arm
with the Union Minister for Civil Aviation Shahnawaz Hussain having given a
not to the expansion of Dabolim airport at the cost of Rs.125 crore.
Hussain also agreed to expedite the construction of Mopa International

QUIET HOLIDAY FOR PM: Truly keeping with his intention of spending a quiet
holiday at Benaulim in Goa, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his
entourage just did that during his stay at the majestic Taj Exotica. The
prime minister, who is accompanied by his foster daughter, her husband,
grand children and others from the Prime Minister's Office, will be on a
holiday here in Goa till January 1, 2003. (H)
BIGWIGS ARRIVE: Undeterred by the threat of terror attack, Goa is all set
to usher in the New Year in its characteristic style. Besides Prime
Minister Vajpayee, Goa will play hosts to several other VIPs and VVIPs too.
Goa's prominent guest will be the Ambassador of USA to India, Mr Robert
Blackwell. Russian Princess Natli Golitsina and her husband are also on a
10-day visit to Goa. Goa has in the last decade been a hot destination for
New Year celebrations for the Central ministers. Travel and tourism
association sources said that hotels have very high bookings in the last

SAFETY OF TOURISTS: The efficiency and the professional acumen of Goa
police is on real test. They have been stretched between looking after the
security of the Prime Minister, holidaying in Goa, and ensuring the safety

ANTI-GARBAGE STIR AT QUEPEM: The Quepem Citizens Action Committee formed to
oppose the Margao Municipal Council's move to dump garbage from Sonsodo to
Cupwado held a morcha under the leadership of Quepem MLA Chandrakant
Kaylekar. Around 2,000 villagers from Ambaulim, Cupwada, Gaonkarwada,
Deusa, Balli, Cavrem and Morpirla took part in the morcha. (GT)
HOSPICIO FINED: In a significant judgement, a civil court in Margao ha
awarded Rs.1 lakh to the parents of a baby, who was alleged to be
negligently declared dead by the doctors at Hospicio Hospital here in 1990. (H)
CHOPDEM-KERI ROAD: Mandrem MLA Laxmikant Parsekar has informed that the
widening of the 10-km road between Chopdem and Kerim would be completed by
the end of 2003. (H)
MEET FAILS TO OKAY LAND FOR CEMETERY: The Margao Municipal Council at its
ordinary monthly meeting held yesterday evening failed to approve the
proposal of Grace church to acquire land for cemetery. A clear division
among the councilors was evident as those belonging to the minority
community questioned why the issue had been brought before the Council
without properly examining the same. (GT)
ONE-MONTH OLD BABY ABANDONED: An one-month old baby left abandoned on a
bench of Margao Municipal Garden was sent to Bal Niketan yesterday by the

CSI PC USERS MEET: The CSI Goa Chapter monthly PC User Meet for January,
for users of PCs (Office users, Home users, student users, professionals
using PCs, etc.) will be held on 11 January 2002, 4 PM to 6 PM, at the CSI
office, 3rd floor, opp. Hotel Navtara at Panjim. Open to everyone and
designed to help PC Users get more out of their PCs by way of productivity
and overall usage and awareness, the meet will feature a short talk by an
advanced PC User on some of the tools/technologies and tips-n-tricks with
Internet Email. It will be followed by a question-answer and discussion
session. Future sessions on Internet Downloads, Audio and Video
Technologies for the Home PC and other such interesting areas of PC usage

VILLAGERS GHERAO ENGINEER: Around 50 villagers of Canaguinim, under the
leadership of Romaldo Lobo, held a demonstration and gheraoed the assistant
engineer yesterday. The villagers are irked about the failure of the
department to provide water to them for the last three days. (GT)
MATHEMATICS CONFERENCE: The 68th annual conference of Indian Mathematical
Society was held at Shivaji University, Kolhapur, from December 20 to 24.
An exhibition on Mathematics was organised by Mr RB Khandeparkar, vice
principal of hither secondary section of St Parvatibai Chowgule College,

KONKANI POETRY BOOK: The Goa edition chief of daily "Pudhari", Mr Prabhakar
Dhage, said that there was a need for critical analysis of the Konkani
poems written by the fourth generation Konkani poets. Mr Dhage spoke on the
occasion of the release of "Gavantli Sanj", a collection of Konkani poems,
written by Sanjeev Verenkar. (NT)
ANTIQUE FURNITURE: Saudades, an antique furniture showroom, operating from
a grand Portuguese manor, opposite Mae de Deus chapel, Sangolda-Saligao,
has authentic antique furniture for sale. The owners RK Moorthy and his
wife Jacinta Moorthy are not in favour of restorers who give antique wood a
new look by tearing down its personality or adding a new element to mend a

EXHIBITION OF PAINTINGS: Kala Manthan, a group of eight artists, has
organised an exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculptures at the Kala
Academy's Art Gallery, Panjim. It will be inaugurated at 4 pm by CM Manohar
