A film about growth and self discovery

THE NAME MY MOTHER GAVE ME

A film by Eli Tal-El

56 min. New Release

Dear Librarian:

Jews have been in Ethiopia for thousands of years. Their yearning to
get to the Jewish homeland became true in the early 1980's when tens
of thousands of Ethiopian Jews were airlifted to Israel. The
realities of preserving and creating identity in modern day Israel
are beautifully illustrated in this moving documentary.

THE NAME MY MOTHER GAVE ME follows Ethiopian and Russian Israelis who
meet at a leadership program in Israel. Their year of learning
culminates in a joint journey to Ethiopia. Though, back home in
Israel, the participants would consider themselves members of the
fringes of Israeli society, in the highlands of Ethiopia they
discover the universality of their experiences and their shared
commitment to their new home in Israel.

In a fast-changing society where personal definitions are not always
clear, it is refreshing to watch as young people of different
backgrounds learn, share and grow as individuals and as Israelis.

THE NAME MY MOTHER GAVE ME will be shown on May 14th at the BINA
Cultural Foundation in New York – and we think that the film is an
excellent choice for your upcoming festival line-up. After opening at
the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival, Shula Mula, the director of the
Israeli Association for Ethiopian Jews wrote about the film: "THE
NAME MY MOTHER GAVE ME is carefully crafted- with sensitivity and
wisdom. The film portrays believable images full of authentic emotion
that touch the heart."

The price for the purchase of the film is $300 for university
libraries and $115 for public libraries. The price does not include
shipping and handling.
