*Archival Intern, Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry*

*Rare Book & Manuscript Library*

*Columbia University*

The Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library is searching for a
graduate student assistant to aid in the arrangement and description of the
Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry.

The Language and Culture Archive of Ashkenazic Jewry (LCAAJ), is an
extraordinary resource for research in Yiddish studies, consists of 5,755
hours of audio tape field interviews with Yiddish speaking informants
collected between 1959 and 1972 and ca. 100,000 pages of accompanying
linguistic field notes. The Archive does not include transcriptions of the
interviews.

The data that constitutes the LCAAJ was collected from 603 locations in
Central and Eastern Europe carefully chosen to reflect the distribution of
the Yiddish speaking population on the eve of World War II. In a series of
interviews lasting anywhere from 2.5 to 16 hours, informants answered
questions on a wide variety of topics concerning Yiddish language and
culture. The project was designed by Professor Uriel Weinreich, then
Chairman of Columbia University's Department of Linguistics, and continued
after his death in 1967 under the direction of Dr. Marvin Herzog, Atran
Professor Emeritus of Yiddish Studies at Columbia University, who donated
the Archive to the Columbia University Libraries in 1995. Dr. Herzog
passed away in 2013.

Working under the supervision of an experienced archivist, the intern will
aid in the process of arranging, rehousing, and describing the LCAAJ
Archive. Work includes arranging and describing the collection, creating
full finding aids, noting conservation issues (folded documents, extreme
acidification, et. al.), re-housing (where indicated), and re-labeling
(where indicated. The intern will assist in the cataloging of collections
they have processed and will participate in the EAD encoding process. The
intern will consult collection files for provenance information and other
collection-specific information and conduct research to find related
archival collections at Columbia or other repositories.

*Requirements*

Enrolled student in an MLIS or archival training program; some experience
or coursework in archives and EAD creation; excellent organizational
skills, accuracy, and attention to detail; ability to work independently
and collaboratively in a production-oriented, team environment; ability to
work quickly, efficiently, and meet project goals and deadlines.

Preferred: Yiddish language; German language; previous library or archival
experience

 *Skills Development*

As part of a NEH grant to process and make available the Language and
Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry, the interns use the theories of
appraisal, arrangement, and description and apply them to manuscript
collections. This includes researching people or events covered by a
collection, sorting, cleaning, arranging, boxing, and creating a finding
aid.

*Professional Interactions/Development*

Interns will be encouraged to attend bi-weekly meetings of the RBML staff
where broader issues of importance to library professionals are discussed
as well as participate in project discussions with supervisors.
Additionally, a range of professional development events hosted by the
larger Columbia Libraries are open for attendance by the interns. Tours of
the RBML will be provided as well as opportunities to discuss the
curatorial stewardship of archival collections.

hours on one day; otherwise hours are flexible).
