We at Hebrew Union College will not go crazy changing every Romanization (that Even shoshan comes up with) in our romanized titles. Most patrons will tend to search by Hebrew title anyway. However access points of 1xx,7xx,6xx,4xx,8xx containing the romanizations do urgently need correction and need priority attention whether by libraries that use roman titles AND access points or by those who depend on Romanized access points only. These are words which show different romanizations in that edition from those in earlier editions. In accordance with our policy of following the latest edition available, we will now implement these new romanizations in Hebraica Team cataloging. The list is attached to this message as a Word document. It is also posted on the AJL Cataloging Committee's wiki at http://rascat.pbwiki.com/Discrepancies, under the title "List of New Hebrew Romanizations To Be Implemented by LC, Jan. 2008." This list now precedes on the webpage the shorter one submitted earlier by Jasmin Nof. The first column shows the romanization of words in 1997 edition, the second column shows the romanization in the 2003 edition, and the third column gives the number of instances of the old romanizations found recently in the LC database. CPSO will make the corrections to the affected records, since in several cases there are hundreds of instances of the old romanizations in the LC database. Because Hebraica cataloging staff will not be making the changes, it's possible that a few errors may be made. If you find an error involving one of these words in an LC record, please notify me and I will correct it. At the moment, it's not possible at LC to do keyword searches in the authority file. Until we acquire this capability, probably in the spring of this year, we'll correct headings with the old romanizations on an as-encountered basis. NACO Hebraica participants and Funnel members, please do the same if you find such headings. As we continue to catalog, we will no doubt find other words in the newer Even-Shoshan editions which need correction in our databases. Please post a message to Heb-NACO if you find such a case, and we'll update the LC records and the list in the wiki. Thank you! Joan
