Aaron There is an article in the Hebrew Wikipedia http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%9E%D7%A0%D7%99%D7%99%D7%9F_%D7%94%D7%A9%D7%98%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%AA According to the article, the counting began in the year 312 or 311 B.C. So the year you have is 2317 (it is not be-317 li-shetarot, but 2'317 - the Bet is for two thousand). If you subtract 311 or 312 from 2317 you get: 2005 or 2006 Yossi 2008/2/5 Aaron Taub <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > Dear Colleagues: > > I have a year given on a t.p. as 5766, followed by be-317 li-shetarot > or (ב'שי"ז לשטרות) > > What does ב'שי"ז לשטרות mean? Can it confirm that this is 2005 or > 2006? > > Thanks for your help. > > Aaron > -- Joseph (Yossi) Galron-Goldschläger Head, Hebraica & Jewish Studies Library The Ohio State University Libraries 6001 Ackerman Library, 610 Ackerman Road Columbus, Ohio 43202-4500 USA E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tel.: (614) 292-3362, Fax: (614)292-1918 URL: http://library.osu.edu/sites/jdc/jdc.php Lexicon of Modern Hebrew Literature: http://hebrewlit.notlong.com
