NACO catalogers: FYI -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [PCCLIST] Name Authority Record Cleanup Projects Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2008 10:57:29 -0500 From: Antony Robert David Franks <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: Program for Cooperative Cataloging <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Name Authority Record Cleanup ProjectsTwo cleanup projects began on Feb. 11, 2008 that will increase the number of name authority records distributed for the next several weeks. One project will add 043 and 781 fields to geographic name authority records -- this is a continuation of a project begun in 2006 to enhance name authority records with geographic data (see http://www.loc.gov/cds/notices/notname.html for information on the earlier project). Another cleanup project will remove unnecessary ending punctuation from 1XX headings in older authority records (this generally impacts records created before a policy change in 1989 to exclude such punctuation). While many of these older records will have had ending punctuation removed as they were updated during the last 20 years, a number of records remain to be fixed -- these records have presented vexing challenges to local systems and authority control vendors for many years and have been the source of many complaints. The records will be processed at the rate of approximately 5,000 records per day.Customers receiving weekly name authority distribution records will see the increase beginning with the Feb. 19, 2008 distribution.Any questions regarding these records can be directed to: Cataloging Policy & Support Office email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] February 14, 2008Library of Congress Cataloging Distribution ServiceWashington DC 20541-4912 USA Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: (202) 707-6100 Fax: (202) 707-1334 http://www.loc.gov/cds/-- Joanna K.
