No, that "Uk" is not an adjective--it stands for United Kingdom and can be seen in the 040s of headings in the LC/NACO Authority File. I'm writing to share with you the experience I've had recently with "Uk" rabbinic headings. Some months ago, my attention was drawn to a few with this 040, the LCCNs of which I can't now recall (or dredge out of my e-mail archives). They were all established according to the form in the Catalogue of the Hebrew books in the library of the British Museum (pub. 1867), with no citation from the item in hand and no 67X for the Encyclopedia Judaica. With the help of the Co-op Team, I got in touch with a person in charge of NACO submissions in the U.K. and reminded him of LCRI 22.3C on "Names of Persons With Surnames Written in the Hebraic Alphabet." He replied that he would remind the U.K. Hebrew catalogers of it. Recently I stumbled on another of these headings, nb2007026744 (Jehiel Michel ben Petahiah, 18th cent.), and asked the Co-op Team what I should do about it. Accept it, trusting that no more such headings are being made, or revise it on the basis of the item I had in hand? After some back-and-forthing across oceans, I was told that I could revise such headings to make them conform to LCRI 22.3C. Unfortunately, I had forwarded the book I had by that time, so I haven't revised the heading. But this message to you from me is to give you permission to revise any such headings you may find. Joan
